I'd like to see us make a move for him if we don't have to purge our farm system.

which is exactly what FLA will ask of you guys and any other team. and quite honestly an overweight bad defensive third basemen is not worth it, unless of course you can get him without giving too much because he's still a great batter but think about it. for you guys they'll prolly ask for something like ellsbury and lester/bucholz and for us over in NY they'll ask for something like melky/cano and joba or hughes. If i was brian cashman or theo i would deffinitly not trade for miggy. just wait till he hits free agency which is next year anyways.

He's more than a great batter. He's a Pujols/A-Rod/Bonds type hitter; a generational talent that just destroys baseballs. Put him at first and have David Ortiz and Manny yell at him in Spanish to get in shape.
Ellsbury, Lester and Lars Anderson under the assumption that you can sign him long-term. If not, just wait until free agency comes around.

His long term position is likely LF which would be fine as he can move there after this season when Manny walks. I imagine the package to get him would be similar to getting Johan and I'd prefer Johan.

I think the Sox have a better shot at Miggy than Santana. The Cost would be Ellsbury and Lester. In the short term, the Sox could try Miggy at 1st with Youk at first. In the long term, he is Manny's replacememt...which is not too far away than you think.

Because of their astronomical asking price, the Marlins likely won't move Miguel Cabrera prior to the winter meetings, SI.com's Jon Heyman reports.
They might as well shoot for the moon, as he'll still have a ton of value at the All-Star break. According to Heyman, the Marlins are currently asking for four top youngsters from inquiring teams like the Angels, Yankees, Dodgers and White Sox.

You only trade young, upcoming guys for pitching, like the Beckett deal. You don't do it for a hitter and one that has gained a lot of weight quickly.

Why?
Cabrera is in the midst of a hall of fame career and he's likely not even hit his prime yet.

I really like Bucholz but I think if push came to shove. I could move him in a deal for Miggy. I dont see us trading Ellsbury though. IMO, He has more value to the team right now. He is most likely our starting CF next year and leadoff hitter. IMO, We have enough starting pitching depth to live without Bucholz.

We have enough starting pitching depth to live without Bucholz.
No team has enough starting pitching, ever. The more the merrier.

And he would be the perfect replacement for Manny in the future...

True, But a slugger like Cabrera is as hard or even harder to find. Thats why giving up Bucholz is ok with me. We have a lot of good minor league pitching working its way up the pipeline.

There is a difference between trading good pitching prospects and the top pitching prospect in baseball who has really no arm trouble in his entire career. He had an issue with fatigue that forced him to be shut down but that isn't a structural problem. Just like the Yankees won't trade Hughes or Joba, we aren't going to move Buchholz. If you have a pitcher in the high minors, and in this case major league ready, who is a stud pitcher then you don't trade him for anyone. If he's in A ball, maybe on his way to AA then you can pull the trigger because a lot can happen but when he has shown the ability to pitch in the bigs, he doesn't go anywhere. Not even for Santana. mahalo
