One-time Red Sox front-line prospect Abe Alvarez was released by the Red Sox yesterday, the Providence Journal reported. The lefthander was at Triple-A Pawtucket and had been moved from the starting rotation to the bullpen this year. He had a 6.46 ERA in 13 games.
The Red Sox today activated first baseman Sean Casey today from the disabled list. To make room for Casey, the team designated pitcher Julian Tavarez for assignment. The team now has 10 days to either work out a trade for Tavarez or grant him his outright release.

They also traded bryan corey to the padres for cash considerations and a player to be named later.
Man, I had high hopes for alvarez when he came up. Then he just sucked, huh? I didn't really follow him in the minors.
Tavarez? If we can trade corey to the padres for money and a ptbnl. Why are we having such a hard time trading Tavarez to the rockies, who actually have interest in him??

Alvarez might catch on somewhere as a LOOGY type of pitcher. Maybe. Hard to be successful with an 84 MPH fastball unless you have godlike command.
Tavarez makes 3.9 mil or so, so maybe that's why it's hard to trade him? Who wants a long-reliever/6th starter for 4 million dollars when you can potentially acquire a AAAA guy for the league minimum?

I heard we had some talks with the Rox for Tavarez but they slowed down. Any updates on that?

This is a couple days old.
Along with the Rockies, the Brewers have made a run at Julian Tavarez recently, according to ESPN.com's Jayson Stark.
The Red Sox are still hopeful of coming up with a trade for Tavarez before they're forced to place him on waivers. Stark says they're also listening to offers for David Aardsma and Javier Lopez. However, it's unlikely that they'll move either reliever anytime soon.
