Dustin Pedroia: Darkhorse A.L. MVP?
He has been smashing the cover off the ball. Leads in a lot of statistical categories and has been playing lock down second base. Is there a chance? I thought Youkilis was hitting strong and had backdoor MVP buzz but jeez... Pedroia has been sick.

He has to have a shot. There is really nobody who is standing out right now. Really quite the impressive season by Pedroia so far.

If he stays hot in september, and leads the sox into first place, he might just get it.
Either way, he should be in the top 3 though.

First, some quotes in regards to Boston's favorite runt:

I think there is most definitely a chance. If the MVP chants continue this thing will spread like wildfire thanks to the masses of RSN lol.
But it all depends on what happens from here on in imo. It's pretty much a clean slate going into September with 4 or 5 frontrunners. If he can keep up a 330+ avg, hit 5-10 more hr's and 20 or so more rbi(big if for a little guy) then I think he'll be for sure top 3 with a good chance on winnning it depending on what the other guys do.
“At first, I thought they should just retire that puppy, since nobody's ever won it with more style than me,” Pedroia said of the award, whose past winners include Derek Jeter, Mark McGwire and Cal Ripken. "But then I looked at the front-runners for this year, and I thought, 'why not me?”
Dismissing this year’s top rookies as “pantywaists” who “couldn’t follow my act with a GPS”, Pedroia recounted how season-long ROY favorite Evan Longoria “talked some smack to me, so I stared him down, you know? And when he tried to cover his eyes, my piercing glare broke his wrist.” He also seemed to insinuate to reporters that star rookie pitcher Joba Chamberlain’s trip to the disabled list soon after Pedroia “sent him a message” with a first inning single to CF on July 25th “weren’t no coincidence.”

Re: Dustin Pedroia: Darkhorse A.L. MVP?
Well, he's the best player on a playoff team at the moment, so he has that going for him. And writers love small guys, guys who get hot late, guys who play hard, etc. He has all that going for him. I'd consider him the favorite to get the award, but I'd personally give it to a few other guys like Joe Mauer, Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay and maybe A-Rod before I got to Pedroia. But, Pedroia might just blow by all these guys if he hits .500 in September, which wouldn't really surprise me.
I have no idea what this guy's ceiling is at this point. I thought I was his biggest fan coming into last year and I can't say I expected him to potentially hit .340 with 20 homers and be an MVP candidate. Could he be even better next year? He's only 25. Scary stuff for the rest of the league.
