????
Diddnt he leave boston pissed off at the team???

Lowe told the Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo that while money is important, he wants to go to a quality organization committed to winning, and no organization, in his mind, fits that description better than Boston.

I like the guy and all(him bein a former resident of Quincy and a complete boozebag I feel like we've got things in common)but I feel the Sox could do much better for their no.5
As it stands now the top 3 starters are set(Beckett,Lester,Dice) and there are already a few guys on the team that will be looking to get in the rotation.
Wakefield-Finally going to hang em up?
Masterson-Staying in the pen or going back to starting?
Bowden-Ready for the big leagues yet? and if so, would they put him on the Masterson treatment?
Who else am I forgetting?

Definitely would like to see this guy back. He really grew on me for what he did in the 04 playoff run. And I would rather have a guy who might take less money, then going after burnett.

I don't know much about bowden, is he ready yet? Where is bucholz in his development? As for masterson, I am all for moving him up into the starting rotation, but that still leaves one spot open, and if it was between Lowe/Wake/Bowden, I would rather see lowe there, and not rush bowden.

Beckett
Lester
DIce
Lowe
Masterson

Do better than a #2-#3 starter for the fifth spot in the rotation? You smoke rocks? Lowe would probably be the best #5 starter in the league.

No. He is a Boozebag. Don't you read!

Let's keep my recreational activities out of this educated discussion on the Red Sox, shall we.

I don't know why but I just don't care that much for the guy anymore. Call me nuts but I don't see em aging well.

I'd take him as a fourth/fifth starter but he won't do that and he'll get a lot more $ than we'll offer. I want Masterson in the rotation and Wakefield out. I like Wake and he's been a good player for us over the years but his knuckle is inconsistent and I'm tired of going into each game he pitches thinking we have a 50/50 shot. Plus he's 87 years old

Side note-Bye Timlin. Takin too long but finally...

I don’t know where people are getting this whole “Wakefield is inconsistent” thing. Look at his IP and ERA+ over the past six seasons:

2003: 202.3 IP; 114 ERA+
2004: 188.3 IP; 100 ERA+
2005: 225.3 IP; 109 ERA+
2006: 140.0 IP; 103 ERA+
2007: 189.0 IP; 100 ERA+
2008: 181.0 IP; 111 ERA+

If that isn’t the model of consistency, I don’t know what is. You know exactly what you’re getting with Wakefield: 180+ IP of league-average baseball. And before you scoff at “180+ IP of league-average ball”: you can’t find that kind of production on the free market for cheap (cf. Carlos Silva).

Now, if you want to say that even knuckleballers have to decline or turn to dust at some point and, with each passing season, Wakefield’s stock is a lot riskier, that’s fine. But he damn well hasn’t been inconsistent by any means.

Personally, I’d keep Wakefield until he shrivels up and stops pitching within ten percent of league average. A perpetual team option for $4MM for a guy that gives your back of the rotation stability and a guaranteed 180 IP a year? That’s like the greatest team-friendly contract known to man.

You make some points. He is an inning eater but I'm never confident with him starting. His playoff numbers are pretty bad but for 4million a year for a 4th/5th starter is pretty decent.

I’m looking at any FA pitcher, I’d look a Lowe first and if he’s too expensive, I’d look towards Oliver Perez. Perez is extremely inconsistent but when he's on he's one amazing talent. Plus he's still pretty young.

Red Sox are said to be monitoring another Dodger. Brad Penny.

Yep.

Looking back at the ex marlin pitchers:

Penny: Dodgers. Meh
Beckett: Red Sox. Amazing
Pavano: Yankees. Bust
Willis: Tigers. Bust
Burnett: Blue Jays. Still not a fan of this guy.

Theo is an awesome GM.
