Sports Radio 810 WHB in Kansas City reports that the Red Sox have traded Coco Crisp to the Royals in exchange for Ramon Ramirez.

Let's hope this guy falls into the Okajima/Papelbon category and not the Hansen/Romero crew.

And it was a weird ride Coco, good luck in exile.

I remember loving coco when he first was traded here, then he **** his finger up in texas, and never was the same that year. My favorite memory of him by far is ducking, and taking a swing at shields.

Actually no. I watched the replay plenty of times. But did not see it live. I did watch that rays game live though, and you knew it was coming.

Ugh. Is that really all the Sox could get for a GG center fielder with very reasonable contract coming off a somewhat respectable return to form at the plate? With the glut of DH/1B types on the Royals, they couldn’t have gotten somebody like Billy Butler or Kila K’apostrophe’alia’moreapostrophe?

Even worse, this means Tacoby Bellsbury will now be the Sox starting CF. From a defensive standpoint, it’s a pretty even tradeoff with Coco but, man, I don’t think he’s ever going to hit with consistency at the major league level. His entire minor league success was predicated on contact, a high BABIP, and beating out a sh*t ton of grounders (he had well over a 55% GB rate in the minors).

Not that it really matters how many teams he played for but, combined with his somewhat pedestrian minor league numbers (less than 9 K/IP, 3.68 BB/IP, 1.28 WHIP), he seems like your typical nondescript minor league journeyman relief pitcher.

When I first read the name I thought theo landed a prospect. Now that I see his history, I really don't understand this deal.

Wasn't there a deal on the table before last season of Coco for Ryan Dempster? Man, I wish we would have made that deal.

If Ramirez can pitch like he did last season I'm all for the deal. But with the pressure up in Boston I'm just not so sure. Can't say I'm a huge fan of this trade. I thought trading Coco was a good idea, but would have expected more in return.

i'd rather swap coco for butler or ryan shealy and go after the free agent market where there's plenty out there that can put up similar numbers as ramirez, but i hope ramirez makes me bite my tongue

Crisp was a 4th OF who was set to make 5.75 million dollars this year. Can't say I'm exactly upset that they traded him for a Manny Delcarmen clone. You can very easily replace a guy like Crisp for much less money.

Just another 5 million to use towards signing Sabathia as far as I see it.

We aren't going after Sabathia.

Why? He's one of the best pitchers in baseball and he's a free agent. And the Yankees are the only team with more money to throw at him.

And if we go by MORP, Ellsbury was worth 21 million and change last year. He's very good.

At one point have the Sox been mentioned as a team interested in Sabathia? He wants more than we're willing to pay. We may go after Burnett but he won't cost nearly as much. Let's just say for S's and giggles that we sign a Lowe or a Burnett. Lester, Beckett, Dice K, Wake plus add Bucholz/Bowden/Masterson/Lowe or Burnett I'm sure we would trade one of the young arms for catching help but as you can clearly see we aren't going to be hurting for pitching.

I wouldn't mind getting CC but it isn't in their plans.

It was reported on si.com that we have in fact, contacted the agents for CC.

Why sign Lowe or Burnett when you can acquire a top-5 pitcher in baseball? Why settle for players who aren't very good? If you want Lowe just put Masterson in the rotation and ask him to look confused every few innings. You want Burnett? Put a gurney on the mound and get Doctor Andrews on speed dial.

I have no idea what the Red Sox are planning and neither does anyone except the Red Sox. They have oodles of money to spend. So spend it on the best player available. It's not the high price of free agents you should avoid, it's the high price of mediocrity.

And anyway, apparently the Blue Jays are offering AJ Burnett a five-year deal. No thanks.

BG, do you think Sabathia would come here? It's been said that he wants to stay out west. Probably the NL because he likes to hit. But if he does go for the money, the yankees have more to spend.

I have no idea if Sabathia will come here, but by and large you go to wherever you're going to get the most money. But I guess he might decide he'd rather play out West which is certainly reasonable. He's going to make a hundred million bucks no matter what he does, so why do it somewhere you don't feel comfortable?

I do think the Red Sox should focus solely on the elite free agents and avoid these middling guys like Burnett and Lowe, though. They just end up being the worst deals. Go for the really highpriced guys and the really lowpriced guys; none of this stuff in the middle.
