Trade targets?

Any word on who the Sox might go after as we start creeping toward the deadline? We have the chips to get pretty much anyone if Theo feels they're worth it.

The one position that seems like we could make a significant upgrade at is ss*, what shortstops are on the block? How would the Mets feel about Reyes for a free Lugo and some combination of Bowden, Bard, Bucholz etc. etc.
There are sure to be of's out there, but we seem to be set out there with Bay on a warpath, Drew locked up at big money longterm and what seems to be the future with Ellsbury.

*excluding catcher, seeing as Theo for some reason wants Varitek back there forever.

Miggy Cabrera was the hot name for awhile, but the tigers seem to have things turned around, and probably will not deal him.

After a hot start let's see if Florida continues to tail off. Theo has kicked the tires more then once on Hanley Ramirez. I would love to see him back. I don't know what you would have to give them. I don't see the mets dealing reyes.

I'd love to get Hanley Ramirez back. But I wouldn't even know where to start on what it would cost the Sox.

At least one club — the Red Sox — already has been in contact with the Indians about Martinez, according to two major-league sources.

The teams had a specific conversation about a month ago that involved premium players on both sides, but the talks failed to progress, a third source said.

Since then, the Indians' season has only turned worse.

The team is in last place in the AL Central, 7 1/2 games back. Its 14-25 record is the worst in the American League and second-worst in the majors.

Sadly I assume this would be to replace Ortiz, and not Varitek.

Matt LaPorta's name has come up with Martinez as well.

I really don't want to trade Buchholz. :(

Jack Wilson has been rumored to be available, i think he could hit pretty well at Fenway and would be a major plus in the field. Pittsburgh usually takes pennies on the dollar for players so i think the price would be cheap. Personally a Michael Young would be ideal, the price in pitching would be costly but for the next 4 or 5 years the chance of winning it all would increase immensly in my opinion.

Peter Gammons told ESPN's Mike & Mike In The Morning on Thursday that the Nationals have discussed swapping Nick Johnson for Boston's Manny Delcarmen.

meh..

Yeah, I agree. Nick Johnson is pretty good when healthy, but I don't think he's a Manny Delcarmen-better than Carter or Bailey for the role he'd end up playing here.

If I'm going trade Manny Delcarmen I'd rather get somebody better than a glorified Sean Casey.

His contract is terrible though.

What, 7 1/2 million this year? Ownership has that in the cushions of their couch. As for shortstop i think someone that can find the first baseman will do. The biggest need is a DH/C/1st baseman (Ortiz is not the answer). Jeff Clement of the Mariners (3rd pick in 2005) is hitting like crazy at Tacoma. I'll guarantee he wouldnt be 4 automatic outs a game.

Not this year, it's the $80 million left over 5 years, ending when he is 37! years old.

09-13:$16M annually (total of $15M deferred)

It's just a bad contract, especially for a player who is already not the same defensively.

Francoeur could be interesting but he is like a rocco baldelli or jd drew. I don' think he is what we need not enough power and he hasn't been doing well in a couple of years after being the next great brave, maybe a change does him good maybe not. I think a cheaper alternative could be Jack Cust from Oakland he strikes out but he has power and does have an ok obp. I believe he walked the most times last year or the year before, and you wouldn't have to give up a brad penny. He has power numbers the last two years and will hit homers and could be better in this lineup much like bay who was a good player with the pirates but is definitely better.

I'm interested to see what we can get for Penny. Teams know we're almost forced to move him.

The solution to the Red Sox [team stats]’ shortstop problem may very well have been sitting in the visitors dugout last night.

Veteran Omar Vizquel probably isn’t going anywhere with the Rangers leading the AL West, but he won’t lie - he wishes the Red Sox made a play for him when they had a chance.

“They haven’t even called anybody to see if I’d want to go, or if (Texas) would let me go,” Vizquel said before last night’s 8-1 Sox win at Fenway Park [map]. “They haven’t really called me ever. They didn’t call in the offseason. They didn’t call in spring training. They always talk about it, but they never call the right people to see if I’m available.”

In the interests of accuracy, the Red Sox did inquire about Vizquel this year, but the Rangers weren’t interested in a trade.

Vizquel, the 42-year-old winner of 11 Gold Gloves, is with Texas to act as a mentor to rookie Elvis Andrus and has just 51 at-bats. While he had nothing bad to say about the Rangers, he couldn’t help but envision what kind of fit he’d be in Boston.

“It would have been great,” Vizquel said. “The Red Sox are a veteran team. All I’d have to do here is make the plays at short. I don’t think they’d worry about me hitting too much.”

hmmmm...

I'd like to think there are better options that Vizquel out there for the taking.

I don't want Vizquel. Maybe back in the 90's or early 00's, but not now.

I actually want to go big, or do nothing, at short. You either go big and trade for someone like Hanley, or even Jack Wilson. Or just wait for Lowrie to comeback, and outright release lugo.

Jack Wilson is garbage. Just wait until Lowrie is back.

Something needs to be done about third base. For all the talk about shorstop defense, Mike Lowell has been **** horrible at third. I feel like they should put Youkilis over at third and put Bailey/Carter/Bates at first and have Lowell and Ortiz platoon DH. Has no one mentioned this? A Lowell/Ortiz platoon would be great.

Lowell has been pretty brutal out there I agree. I wonder if they could just flip flop him and Youk. Although that is a lot to ask of Lowell at this point.
