I hope Jimbo doesn't make a deal just to make a deal. Like a Marlon Byrd for prospects.

Outfielder Marlon Byrd, named the Harold McKinney Good Guy of the Year winner, acknowledged he's been informed the Chicago Cubs have expressed interest in him.

The Cubs are seeking a right-handed hitting center fielder or possibly a full-time center fielder if they have to include outfielder Felix Pie in a deal with Baltimore to possibly get lefty Erik Bedard and second baseman Brian Roberts.

The Rangers have reportedly turned down an offer of outfielder Matt Murton for Byrd and would not be willing to revisit the deal unless Chicago adds at least one or two young pitching prospects.

Boston traded for David Aardsma.

Funny Cubs connection. Remember we got him for dealing LaTroy Hawkins. Then we dealt him for Neil Cotts.

He had an amazing start to his year with the Sox. Like a 1.50 ERA with 2K/IP. Until he faced the Cubs. In the series the Cubs faced him twice, and hit him for 5 and 4 ER's. He was soon sent to AAA and hasn't pitched well since.

Rotowire:
Reds signed catcher Paul Bako to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
It's pretty bad when you target Paul Bako and still come away empty-handed, as the Pirates just did. Bako, who hit .205/.277/.256 in 156 at-bats for Baltimore last season, will only make the Reds if they decide to carry three catchers.

Now Dusty needs to sign Neifi.

Greene Nearing 2-Year Deal With San Diego

Khalil Greene's big 2007 season with the Padres is about to pay off with a nice contract that will allow the shortstop to avoid arbitration, according to an Associated Press reeport.

The two sides spoke Saturday and were closing in on a two-year deal worth roughly $11M, according to a person familiar with the negotiations.

So much for wanting to move to the East coast with his family. He has 11 million reasons to stay now.
