Pie and Soto Predictions

Post#1 » by Ruben Douglas » Sat Feb 9, 2008 10:53 pm

Assuming the Cubs keep Pie, what are your predictions for the years these two are going to have? What about their careers?

Personally, I think Soto will prove to be a slightly better than average catcher. This season I think he'll hit around .270 with approx. 15 hr's.

Pie, I think will be a bust. I think he'll start off slow and cause the Cubs and Pinella to worry, which will cause a platoon situation for him and he will eventually be sent down to the minors. His career will be in shambles and the Cubs will eventually trade him next off-season for a quarter of what they could have gotten for him now.

I hope I'm dead wrong...

I didn't see much out of Pie last year but he is really tearing it up in the minors. Hopefully he gains confidence this year and it will all be smooth sailing after that.

^ I hope you're right. I just hope that the Cubs have the patience with these young players. If they don't start out on fire they have to wait.

Ruben Douglas, the guy just turned 23 yesterday, even if he completely tanks it this year, its not out of the question to think he can turn it around before he turns 26.

Plus, the Cubs have been known to blow up their potential big leaguers into mega stars. See Shawon Dunston, and Corey Patterson.

He looks legit and his flaws can be improved. His timing at the plate is off, and he was probably intimidated since it was his first year last year. The guy was only 22.

When I was 22, I just graduated and I was blowing all my money.

Very good points. I think it's just that I'm used to seeing that scenario play out. I can honestly say that I didn't realize that he was this young. It says a lot to me that a franchise can't bring up any of their own players that can contribute to their own team offensively since '88.

I think it would be obvious that Soto's major league numbers would decrease to what can be normally expected of him. That may be uncertain right now, but i expect him to have a very good year, perhaps in contention for ROY.

I am more pessimistic on Pie, although I think he has more hope than lets say Patterson as BEP mentioned. Pie is above average in every category that he needs to be at centerfield, excluding hitting for average. With consistent playing time I think he will get that batting average up.

Pie- .265 5 HR's 30 SB's
Soto- .279 18 HR's

The NL Rookie of the Year race is going to be intense this year and the Cubs have 2 rookies with Fukudome and Pie.
The Astros have a few rookies who will be in the race and the Marlins now have Cameron Maybin. I don't think Colby Rasmus (St. Louis) will play enough this year to get rookie status but he could win as well.

Pie is no longer considered a rookie.

Success at Pie's age isn't out of the question, but its very difficult. Plus the way the Cubs speak about him we expect solid to all star quality.

There are players like Crawford, Pujols, Granderson, Franceour, Salty, Braun, etc who have been successful, but its rare.

The numbers from the guys metnioned above is what we have been groomed to accept from Pie.

Thats really not fair for Felix. Those numbers are supreme.

I'd be happy with .270avg single digit homers over 50rbis and over 20 stolen bases with a .330 obp. Of course, gold glove quality defense.

I would be disappointed if Pie only has 20 stolen bases this year.

really? Nawwww. I don't mind him having around 25 or so stolen bases. He really needs to focus on his defense. Thats whats going to get him playing time, plus batting against lefties.

He couldn't hit a damn thing against lefties last year. He needs to pull off at least .250 or so against lefties. and .280 against righties. I'd be happy with that.

Of course if he performs like a superstar, I'd take that too, but I'd be pleasantly surprised.

What I wouldn't be happy with is if he was so bad he became a late inning defensive replacement/pinch-base-runner.

He needs to improve and this team with all its stars, is a good atmosphere for that.

Its hard not to have pressure in Chicago, especially the Cubs, but at least he isn't counted on like Corey Patterson was in 03.
