Jim Hendry signs 4-year contract extension

The Cubs and general manager Jim Hendry are closing in on a multiyear extension that could help stabilize the team’s baseball operations at a time the sale of the franchise is growing increasingly uncertain.

Hendry, who was in the final guaranteed year of his contract but was expected to exercise an option for 2009, is expected to sign an extension that guarantees at least three more years, probably in the next few days.

Organizational meetings in Arizona are scheduled to open at the beginning of the week, which could coincide with an announcement.

The Seattle Mariners, meanwhile, were denied permission to interview Hendry for their GM opening, according to sources.

And the nightmare continues for the cubs (not a supporter of fat boy, never will be)... isn't Cashman available? Why not pursue him??

Hendry's recent moves have been more good than bad. He was awful from 04-06 and should've been fired, but you have to give him an extension after 97 wins.

Although not everything he does works out, he definitely gets what he wants year after year.

You can blame him for dusty and by association the players he signed during the dusty era. The failures of the farm system can be on him though and he needs to get some better scouting and teachers in our system because you cant buy championships anymore...just ask the Yankees.

Yeah our farm system has been pathetic. The Cubs haven't actually developed any studs in the majors recently besides Zambrano, Marmol, and Wood. It's been just free agents and trades.

His immediate priority is an attempt to keep 17-game winner Ryan Dempster and closer Kerry Wood off the free-agent market. Both are close to Hendry and could be influenced by the four-year extension, but they're in position to listen to lucrative offers after completing deals they signed when they faced questions about their health.

wow.. just stunned.. we need a GM that's going to build our farm system not spend most of his time looking to build a team around FA and trades... just complete embarresment that the rays are going to win a WS before we do.. another four years of wait till next year... i can garuntee this though.. when we do win a championship.. it's gonna come unexpectedly.
