Gregg demoted, Marmol named new closer

Post#1 » by SportsWorld » Tue Aug 18, 2009 5:36 am

Haven't heard the press conference yet but I guess Gregg is finally out of the closers role. Either Marmol or Guzman will replace him. Hopefully it's Guzman.

Yes! Let's pray that Guzman is closer and we add Smoltz or some other bullpen piece to replace Heilman. I still think that maybe Gregg could be good in some kind of a role but maybe not. I wouldn't particularly regret to see either of them go as long as they don't go to Cards. Maybe Bell.

Cubs talking to the Mets about Wagner. Makes sense according to Chris Ruddick of the Sports Network's twitter page. Could be a good move. If Wagner can get back to a semblance of his old self he could be very effective.

I cant believe we gave up a top 10 prospect for this POS.

Another Hendry success story.

It's not so much Ceda, he's been out the whole year as much as as it is that somehow Gregg saved 63 games in two years, gave up 10 homers and had a 3.48 ERA and comes here and absolutely sucks that gets me.

Cashner is probably too high of a price. You could probably send Castillo and a middle of the run prospect for Wagner.

I was being sarcastic about Cashner. No thanks to Billy Wagner.

So let me get this straight. You'd rather have an erratic, young guy with terrific stuff who at his prime can be awesome or a guy who is a great SU man with good stuff but can also be erratic be closer than a guy who is reportedly getting it up 93-94 mph with his fastball, his slider looks sharp, and is one of the best closers in baseball when on. And probably for a low price in prospects as well. Wagner could be great.

Hopefully he can control his pitches better.

Whatever Marmol and Guzman are both better than Gregg. Would rather have Guzman there but Marmol is fine as long as he stays consistent.

Was this entire post a joke?

Billy Wagner is like 40 years old coming off TJ surgery and has a HUGE contract.

Please stop. Cashner has been unhittable at AA with the exception of one bad starter. Cashner is a starting pitcher at the moment and looks awesome.

I never suggested we trade Cashner if you actually read through my post. I said that we could probably land him for a couple of middle of the run/lower prospects at most. And Mets might eat up a lot of his contract. Some of us are eager to eat up Soriano's contract so why not take a chance by starting someone who could be a top closer in middle relief and if he looks good put him at SU/closer. I don't think the Red Sox have interest in him for no good reason.
