2009 Cubs waste heroic effort by Derrek Lee

Post#1 » by SpinninHouse » Tue Sep 22, 2009 2:07 am

The 2009 Cubs failed on multiple fronts. High on the list are the pathetic individual performances of Alfonso Soriano, Mitlon Bradley, Kevin Gregg, Geo Soto, and the over-matched Fontenot. But collectively it's extremely disappointing to watch a magnificent effort by Derrek Lee go to waste. He currently is batting .309 with a .390 on-base %, 34 home-runs, and 107 RBI's. At age 34, it's unlikely he will ever reproduce those numbers. Infact, even though he had less homers than his "career year" a few years back -- an argument could be made that 2009 has been D-Lee's best over-all season.

In 2010, D-Lee does not have to reproduce the 2009 performance if Aramis Ramirez stays healthy. A-Ram is a 35/110 guy when he plays 150 games. But if both would have maximum performance years, the Cubs offensively would pretty high-powered.

Many disappointments this year but it's really a shame to waste such a marvelous year by our steadiest player.

Not if there is not anyone in front of them on base.

This season has been disappointing but to treat it as an 100 loss season is idiotic. If we were in the Al Central we would be in real contention.

If we were in the American League, we'd be below .500.

The right thing to do is what many of us have called for, trade Lee. Especially NOW!

But we won't. We'll Kerry Woodify him into the good guy hall of fame, which means irrational decision making ability when it comes time to cut the string, which is now.

I do think the old man has a couple years left in him. He's 34, there's many players who have reached 36 and done well and I believe Derrek is one of those guys. He's one of those freak of nature 6'6'' 250 lbs-runs like a deer kind of guy. His athleticism is still there and although he has lost a step, he still moves extremely well for his size.

Well thats my take on it, but I still want him traded. I think its whats best for the club. The teams window and Derrek's window just don't match. If we can regroup I expect to be back on track, not next year, but the following year. Bradley, Fukudome, and Soriano is too much to solve in one off season.

Aramis Ramirez is having a remarkable season .322 BA 15 HR 70 RBI in 79 games and we all know that shoulder isn't totally healthy.
