I left from Toronto at 5:00 AM Local and landed at 7:16 Central, having already lost an hour of my precious day. We proceeded to walk around downtown for awhile, checking out some buildings. A bit later I bought a new Cubs jersey (Lee). I wanted to take the L train from our Hilton hotel (nicest beds ever) in part to feel like a local, and also because I love me some public transportation.
The ticket-purchasing-sliding setup had me confused at first. I spent 10 seconds examining it and decided to just hop the gate since no authority figure was in sight. The ride was uneventful.
We got to Addison at around noon, and already the lineup for the bleachers was pretty big. So I got in it, right behind a bunch of Brewers fans (7) and talked to them for awhile. One had a sweet Robin Yount jersey on that deserved respect. But all the Brewers female supporters were just mediocre at best. Ugly Brewers fans is a running theme throughout the day.
They let us in about 45 minutes later. We rush to the RF bleachers and get front row, 4 seats from the edge. Sweet. We spend the next two hours drinking far too much and yelling at every player within earshot. I gave Cordero some about the blown save (something about him being on SportsCenter's call of the Day) and Matt Wise talked to us for awhile. Claudio Vargas refused to recognize anyone talking to him, even though he obviously heard us talking about his poor play. I told Dave Bush he lacked the consistent play required of a starter. And I told Turnbow he can't handle closing, he'll be a middle reliever forever and he acknowledged it. By the way, I'm several beers in obviously.
Then the game starts! Well, it was kind of all downhill from here. FonteNOTSTOPGROUNDBALLS was out today for the first time and Marshall couldn't make a pitch. But wait, here's Scott Eyre! What a disaster. The highlights were:
- Everyone yelling "HART! HART!" over and over as he botched RF all day
- A couple Brewers fans calling Cliff Floyd "Curtis Floyd" all day after the 3rd inning. It was kind of funny.
- A guy screaming at the most inoppurtune time of the national anthem
That's about it. Oh well, they took the series and I'd rather win the close ones and lose the blowouts, unlike earlier when it was the opposite. Few more things on my trip to America:
- You guys have HUGE cups in all your fast food places. The only place with cups that big are 7-11, and they're Big Big Gulps.
- I saw like two White Sox hats in my entire trip, and about 3432473462974621 Cubs things. I love this place.
- I went to Murphy's after the game, that thing was packed. Good atmosphere though. Then we met up with a friend, whose friend owned a different bar a few blocks down. I can't remember the name, it has two words and the waitresses wore black. Yes, I was completely drunk by this point.
- Good pizza.
- Bad traffic jam on the way home, 90 minutes in a cab from downtown to the airport. Barely caught our flight while running, straight out of a movie.
Overall, an amazing experiance, I hope to do it again soon. I very much approve of the city.
