The Padres placed catcher Michael Barrett on the 15-day disabled list and optioned pitcher Jack Cassel to Triple A Portland Saturday.
Pitcher Mike Thompson was recalled from Portland, and San Diego also purchased the contract of catcher Pete Laforest.
Barrett was diagnosed with concussion-like symptoms after being kneed in the head while sliding into second base Friday. He was hit in the mask by a foul tip last Sunday against San Francisco. He is hitting .231 in 31 games with San Diego after being acquired from the Chicago Cubs.
