Sounds like my kind of town... Ann Arbor is, my kind of... lol.

I love the small town feel, which you can get in certain neighborhoods in Chicago. I get it in wrigleyville, but this 'ville is getting really really expensive, and I'm getting too old to play the one-up game in life, know what I mean.

My g/f will complain her friend has a new condo, or a new car, all of a sudden I have to wait to a new TV. lol.

I'm happy being peaceful and Ann Arbor sounds a lot like a place I'd like to live. My family has a place in New Buffalo, if your familiar with the SW part of Michigan and I've always wanted to live most of my life there, but there are no jobs.

I'll have to do somem job searching in the Ann Arbor area if it becomes serious. I'll let ya know, maybe we can go to Tiger games in the future.

Oh how I'd love to root against the White Sox!

My beef with Ann Arbor since living here:

-No pigeons is great, but the geese in some areas are just as bad (if not worse)
-I hate bottle deposits
-Roads suck in certain areas (potholes ftl)
-Little to no "good" fast food joints

So as you can see, not much to complain about. Your reasoning for wanting to come to Ann Arbor is much the same I used when deciding to move here. Make no mistake, I thoroughly enjoyed growing up in Chicago, but I have absolutely NO desire to ever move back (or anywhere close really).

Oh the good 'ol bottle deposits.

When I was a kid I had to put my bike on the side of the garage because my Dad had his damn 500 bottles saved for when we went to the Mich house.

I hated unloading those damn bottles out of the car.

Pathetic, I'm embarrased, my parents are so cheap. They're not poor either, a programmer and a nurse, they're just cheap.

500 its was more like 5000. I remember sacraficing a slip N' slide and some super soakers for more room for those damn bottles.

I'm the same way though, something about those bottle deposits really hits the cheapbone in every human being. You never see any stray cans/bottles on the side of the road around here.

Yeah, 10 cents per bottle. What people usually don't realize is that it isn't "free money," when you buy in Michigan you have to pay the deposit and THEN you get it back when you (in theory) return your empties.

I've lost a lot of money I'm sure over the years as a result of not returning my own empty or what have you. Also the reason why I think returning empties to Michigan that you didn't actually pay a deposit for is some form of federal fraud (not like its enforced).

Don't quote me, but I'm fairly sure it is.

The bottom-line is you're getting refunded a deposit that you didn't actually pay for. When I was younger I thought deposits were just a way to reward people for recycling, and while that is part true, when it comes to crossing state lines it gets dicey.

Most places have a $25 per day limit too, but I think that was put into place more because we have a certain population of homeless/poor people that rely on returning empties to make a buck.

yeah, bottle deposit fraud is serious business:

Thirteen people have been arrested in connection with a smuggling ring that collected millions of beverage containers in other states and cashed them in for 10 cents apiece in Michigan as part of a scam straight out of a "Seinfeld" episode, authorities said Wednesday.

Authorities seized more than $500,000 in cash and 15 people were named in a 67-count warrant issued as part of Operation Can Scam, Attorney General Mike Cox said Wednesday. Some suspects were members of two smuggling rings based in Ohio and others were Michigan merchants who took part in the scheme, he said.

The probe recalled a 1996 episode of "Seinfeld" in which two characters learn about Michigan's 10-cent deposit law and head there with a truckload of 5-cent New York cans, hoping to cash in on the difference, before getting sidetracked.

"A half-million in cash is not 'Seinfeld' humor," Cox spokesman Matt Frendewey said.

Investigators alleged that millions of non-redeemable out-of-state cans were collected, crushed, packaged in plastic bags and sold at a discount to merchants who then redeemed them. Bulk redemption payments from the state are based on weight.

The scheme defrauded the Michigan Bottle Deposit Fund, whose proceeds are used to pay for environmental cleanup efforts, Cox said in a statement.

"Each year, this type of activity defrauds the state approximately $13 million," said Col. Peter Munoz, Michigan State Police director.

The charges include maintaining a continuing criminal enterprise, a 20-year felony, and fraud, a 5-year felony, the statement said.
