i would love to get both roberts and bedard. 7 players is a bit ridiculous. The Tigers didn't even have to give up that much for both Cabrera and Dontrelle. My guess with Pineilla saying the deal is put to bed at the convention is that the Orioles requests for players are too steep and Pineilla is blowing smoke saying its dead in order for them to lower their asking price. I only want to see one of Theriot and Derosa on the field.

More trade chatter on Roberts, Bedard

The two Orioles in this scenario are Roberts and Erik Bedard, and it's conceivable that the Cubs inquired about obtaining both of them. If that's true, it doesn't sound like the talks progressed very far, judging by MacPhail's reaction.
It now appears that the Cubs would be willing to part with Rich Hill if they could get Roberts and Bedard in return, but the Orioles haven't shown a willingness to package their two bargaining chips in the same trade. And at least two people in the organization don't believe the Cubs have enough to offer in such a blockbuster. It makes more sense to milk the Seattle Mariners' roster in a Bedard trade

2. So what's up with the supposed 7-for-2 deal with Bedard and Roberts? The read here is this involves a lot of both posturing and face-saving as the Cubs try to do the impossible -- that is, make a significant trade with the Orioles for players whom owner Peter Angelos has not ordered dumped (i.e., Miguel Tejada).
It makes total sense for the Cubs to pursue both players, not just Roberts. I believe Cubs general manager Jim Hendry has tried to soft sell his interest in hopes of expanding a possible Roberts deal. If Andy MacPhail couldn't get Angelos to sign off on the deal at the end of last week, a combination of frustration and gamesmanship could have led Hendry and Lou Piniella to declare the deal dead at the Cubs' convention. I trust the source who has said it has been revived -- something that could not have happened if Hendry had revealed that Angelos was undercutting MacPhail's authority, which he pledged not to do -- so the question is whether Hendry can balance the needs of the Orioles and Rangers and somehow land Bedard, Roberts and Byrd, maybe even in a three-way deal.
And there's still the question of what to do with Mark DeRosa, if Roberts arrives. Some have said the Cubs are worried about Bedard's "medicals,'' but others around baseball believe he should be fine after being shut down at the end of the season with a strained muscle in his side.

More updates!
I remember when Roberts was a Cub 3 weeks ago.
FWIW- Jeff Zrebiec (sp?) from the Sun was on Schmuck's radio show today. He "predicts" Bedard will be traded to the M's by the middle of the week and Roberts will be a Cub by the end of the week or early the following week. He also said he believes the Orioles are counting on getting a closer in one of the deals (specifically mentioned Sherrill) because he has spoken to the agents of all remaining closers on the FA market and they confirmed the Orioles have not contacted any of them.
Roberts will also be a Cub very soon. As in almost directly after Bedard is gone, FWIW.

With all these rumors it will be interesting to see where Roberts and Bedard end up by Spring Training. Is McPhail just bluffing? He's obviously been trying to trade these two for a while now and it seems as though he is trying to get the most for them as he can (who wouldn't). But I think he might be starting to realize that the supply isn't meeting the demand for these two. No other team has blown him away in a deal for Roberts or it would have been done by now. I really feel that if he wants to trade Roberts it's going to be to the Cubs or to no team until the trade deadline. It comes down to McPhail's level of patience.

Report: Mariners to acquire Bedard for Jones
Link
Maybe this opens up trade talks and finally a trade for Roberts?
Link
Adam Jones is flying to Baltimore for a physical on Monday, suggesting the Orioles and Mariners have agreed to an Erik Bedard trade.
Jones said he's been told the deal is done, though he doesn't know who is going with him to Baltimore. Asked by the Seattle Times tonight, George Sherrill said he had heard nothing to suggest he's being included. Top prospects Chris Tillman, Jeff Clement, Carlos Triunfel and Wladimir Balentien are among the players whose names have come up in rumors.
Maybe this opens up trade talks and finally a trade for Roberts?

Good find Posey.
I have faith in this being a catalyst to the Cubs-O's deal.
If this is true, I think its a smart thing for the O's to sell off their players in order of their value/importance.
Tejada
Bedard
Roberts
Their three big assets. Now with Tejada and Bedard gone, why in the hell would they keep Roberts.
This is good for the Cubbies.

Trade Cedeno, Gallagher, and Marshall for Roberts.
My backup plan is to trade Cedeno and Murton for Khalil Greene, but there are no indications that San Diego would be willing to do that kind of a deal.
... My ideal lineup posted again ...
1. Roberts
2. Fukudome
3. Lee
4. Ramirez
5. Soriano
6. Derosa
7. Soto
8. Pie
Best lineup in the National League to go along with one of the best pitching staffs and deepest bullpens.
