O'Malley had a few good games with the major league team last year but can't find momentum in the minors.

I think he's 27 or 28, so it's not like he's a real prospect. The guy's ERA is hovering around 6 at Iowa. He can't be counted on at all.

Scott Moore hit 2 homers today for Iowa.
Felix Pie went 3-5 with a triple.
Buck Coats hit 2 doubles and went 2-4.
Ryan O' Malley did bad yet again but the bullpen saved us (Irony?)

Eric Patterson hit his 6th homer of the year.
Pie went 1-3
Rocky Cherry blew a save but got a win

Eric Patterson is going to be awesome. Too bad he's not going to get any playing time until Mark DeRosa isn't good next year.

He's the best hitter in the minors for us. (even better than Pie)
They have been playing him in LF for some god unknown reason lately. Like we need more LFers.
The only reason he's not in the majors now is his brother & his bad defense.
Kinda hard to work on your 2B defense playing LF though. And people wonder why the Cubs have trouble developing players in the minors.

Eric Patterson has been playing amazing. Since I started following the Iowa Cubs like 2 weeks ago he has hit a homer in like all but 3 games.

Is his defense at 2B an issue? I have no idea, but the only defensive metrics for minorleaguers rates him exceptionally high.

+54 plays over 150 games is just ridiculous stuff. I think it'd be hard to be a poor defender and put up numbers like that.
If you move him to LF he's barely a league average starter at that position. Plus he's blocked by Soriano/Murton/Pie/whoever else. Keep him at 2B and he's got a chance to be among the league's elite with Chase Utley and Kelly Johnson.

Iowa lost 18-8 tonight thanks to an awful outing by our best friend Neal Cotts.
Neal Cotts got absolutely pounded. Giving up 9 ER 4 BB in 1 2/3 Innings.

Geovany Soto will be the lone Chicago Cub representative at the 2007 All Star Futures game for the World Team. Future catcher for us in the coming years? How far do you think he is away from being on a Major League roster?

Ronny Cedeno Named PCL Batter of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.- After making history on June 25th by recording just the third-ever nine-inning perfect game in the Pacific Coast Leagues's 104-year history, Manny Parra of the Nashville Sounds was today named the league's Pitcher of the Week for the period of June 25-July 1. At the plate, the Iowa Cubs' Ronny Cedeno was the league's top performer, garnering the Batter of the Week honors.
Parra followed his celebrated June 25th performance against Round Rock with a six-inning showing on June 30th, also against the Express, when he allowed just two hits and a single run. On the week, the 24-year old lefty posted a record of 2-and-0 with an ERA of 0.60, striking out 15 batters in 16 innings of work. The Sacramento, California native is currently in his sixth professional season with the Milwaukee Brewers organization and his first at the Triple-A level.
I-Cubs infielder Ronny Cedeno slugged five homers and drove in ten runs for a slugging percentage of 1.069 during his award-winning week. He also posted a .448 batting average during that stretch, racking up 13 total hits with three doubles in seven contests. A native of Carabobo, Venezuela, the 23-year old Cedeno now holds a season batting average of .387 with nine home runs and 25 RBI.

In a 2-2 game, with the winning run at third in the bottom of the ninth, the New Orleans Zephyrs tried to intentionally walk Eric Patterson. However, on the fourth pitch, Patterson reached out and slapped a single past surprised Zephyrs thirdbaseman

Darwin Barney (formerly of the Oregon State Beavers) signed a contract with the Cubs and is expected to be sent to single-A Boise before too long.
I work as a beat writer for a Giants' minor-league affiliate in the same league as Boise (Northwest League, motherf**kers), so I can keep you guys updated somewhat. My first update: Boise sucks.
Here's some other stuff in the meantime (from MiLB.com):
Boise Hawks (Chicago Cubs)
SO FAR THIS SEASON: The Hawks are 6-13 and tied with Yakima for second place in the East Division.
WHO'S HOT: Infielder Marquez Smith is hitting .241 with a pair of extra-base hits on the season and 16 RBIs, but 12 of those RBIs have come in the past week. He has struck out just nine times in 58 at-bats, less often than he's been walked (10).
TAKE A WHIFF: Right-hander Al Alburquerque is tied for third in the Northwest League with 22 strikeouts in 15 1/3 innings pitched this season. He stands at 0-1 with a 4.70 ERA in four starts for the Hawks.
VIEW FROM THE TOP: Catcher Steven Clevenger sits atop the Northwest League with a .373 batting average. He has five doubles and nine RBIs for the Hawks on the season.
TWOFER: Shortstop Dylan Johnston leads the Northwest League with 12 doubles, including six this past week. He is hitting .265 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs after a less than stellar stint with Class A Peoria. His 14 extra-base hits are also the most in the league.
