Tribune:
Roster moves afoot: The Cubs will send a reliever, likely Jeff Samardzija or Jeff Stevens, to Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday to make room for starter Tom Gorzelanny. Samardzija has been ineffective against left-handed hitters, who are batting .393 against him.

"The stuff looks good to me," Piniella said, adding Samardzija's command is the real problem. "He throws a lot of pitches, he falls behind, he walks people -- and that's not good."

Piniella also said Aaron Miles is almost ready to return from Iowa, which could mean a demotion for Andres Blanco.

Why the hell is Aaron Miles still in this organization? Blanco is better than him. And lol if Stevens gets sent down over Shark.

BCB:

Right fielder Tyler Colvin tied a Southern League record by getting hits his first three times at-bat today, thus extending his hit-streak in consecutive at-bats to 11. Colvin tied the record in style, too, as consecutive hit #11 was his ninth home run of the year in AA. It was a three-run home run in the fourth inning. Colvin was 3 for 5 overall and scored twice.

Aaron Miles did not play for Iowa today, likely getting called up. :-?

I don't like the walks but the WHIP is still under 1.0. Anything at all from Ryan would be great.

Starlin Castro promoted to AA.

He was 2 for 4 with a walk in his AA debut. He scored once and had two RBI.

Im not worried, but he really needs to work on his D.

i wouldn't worry about Castro's D...He has plus plus arm strength. He is probably our number 1 prospect now with Cashner number 2. Vitters probably has fallen behind them and it isn't really his fault. The other two have been outstanding.
"I just wanted to play because I just love the game," Jennings said. "It doesn't matter to me. I get up to play basketball. It's my job. I have to still be a professional and finish the season."

Vitters is still way, way ahead of them as far as prospects go. Numbers aren't everything in the minors, Vitters has special bat speed that gives him star potential.

I don't think I would say that with any certainty. The scouts I have spoken to have been comparing Castro to Hanley Ramirez and Cashner has been sitting at 93-96 with a hammer slider.

There is probably a 50/50 split in the Cubs org on who is the better player between Vitters and Castro right now. This is a great sign for the Cubs org moving forward.

Pitcher Jay Jackson, who represented the Smokies in the SL All-Star Game and was the winning pitcher for the North Division, was sent down to Class A Daytona last week by the Cubs for disciplinary reasons.

"Very simple," Fleita said in explaining the move. "Failure to comply with club policy."

Fleita wouldn't be more specific but he liked the way the 21-year-old from Greenville, S.C, responded to his punishment. Jackson pitched 52<0x2044>3 innings in a no-decision against Charlotte. The right-hander allowed an unearned run on four hits with one walk and nine strikeouts.

"What he's done since is the way you're supposed to do it," said Fleita, who hasn't ruled out Jackson's return to the team. But Fleita didn't indicate if that would be this season.

Brett Jackson has really gotten off to a good start this year. And it's great that he signed early to get this development time.

Brett Jackson, OF, Cubs (Low-A Peoria)
Sunday's stats: 4-for-6, 2B, HR (5), 3 R, 3 RBI, K
While nearly half of this year's first-round picks enter the final day of negotiations unsigned, Midwest League scouts are wondering how Jackson dropped to the 31st overall pick. Now batting .320/.414/.573 with five home runs and eight stolen bases in 17 games, Jackson's power/speed combination is moving him up prospect lists while others wait to get their pro career even started. -Kevin Goldstein

Brett Jackson has been very surprising and solid. He is on a good plan to possible be big league ready in 2 years. Hopefully he continues to hit through the majors. I like that his upside is anywhere from a 2-5 hitter.

I also like that DJ LeMahieu was able to skip rookie ball and adjust successfully in Peoria. Ryan Flaherty is having a good year too. Id like to see him hit for a better average, but he has had some of the best power in the lower levels. Eventually I think one of these two needs to be moved over to 1st. They are both tall for the middle infield and we dont have any real 1st base prospects.

Josh Vitters seems to be back after some injury problems and a slight struggle in his promotion to Daytona.

He went 1-4 two days ago with his first FSL homer and a combined 5-7 in a double header yesterday.
