I like Blanton but his numbers outside of Oakland are pretty bad.

Yost: Kendall's throwing percentage misleading
http://blogs.jsonline.com/brewers/archi ... ading.aspx
Phoenix - The statistics say that new Brewers catcher Jason Kendall had a horrible year trying to throw out runners last season.

Manager Ned Yost says those numbers don't tell the whole story.

"You have to look at how many times did the catcher have the opportunity to throw the runner out? And then gauge and judge his throwing off of that," said Yost, who spent much of the winter examing video of Kendall's work behind the plate. "It's a diluted stat to say Jason Kendall was the worst thrower in baseball last year.

"His pitchers did not give him a chance. It was probably 70% of the time (that he had no chance). So, then he's a 30% thrower, which is about right.

Kendall, who split the season between Oakland and Chicago, threw out only 5 of 57 runners (8%) with the Cubs, and 20 of 131 (15.3%) overall, one of the worst percentages in the major leagues.

"Forget throwing percentage as a judge of a catcher's defensive abilities," said Yost. "It is not a true judge of what he's capable of doing. That's not fair because so much depends on a pitcher's ability to give him a chance."

Someone needs to alert Yost that Kendall sucks

The rationale that Yost used can be used for every catcher in Major League Baseball basically. It will be slightly different for all catchers, but the % difference would not be that great. Even if you give Kendall some better pitches his 15.3% would only be increased slightly.

hes obviously bs'ing to defend his new catcher, theres no way that even he could believe that, because the fact is kendal has a pea shooter arm.

Carlos Marmol in Winter Ball, from BP. #1 on the list of the best reliever performances.

1. Carlos Marmol: If this was an audition for the Cubs' closer spot, then the Cubs really should tell Kerry Wood to step aside for the good of the team. Marmol was essentially perfect: he faced 40 batters, and 22 of them

Marmol would be a beastly as a closer. But I don't want him there. I like using him in crucial situations in the 6th, 7th, or 8th innings where he can get out of jams and sometimes pitch more than one full inning.
