Cubs Eyeing Lieber?
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/01/c ... g-lie.html
Here's a rumor of mild interest. 1060West relays a Bruce Levine radio report in which Jon Lieber is mentioned as a possible target for the Cubs. Lieber won 20 games for the Cubs in 2001, but went down with Tommy John surgery the following year. Getting Lieber from the Pirates for Brant Brown in '98 was a nice move by Ed Lynch.

At the right price I think Lieber could be a capable fifth starter for a lot of National League clubs. I wouldn't expect him to demand two years, but you never know. The Mets, Reds, Royals, and Rangers may also be considering Lieber.

Eww gross! I'd rather keep Dumpster in the rotation. That's not saying much.

This would be just as bad as the Trachsel trade last year.

The Pirates have sent an undisclosed amount of cash to the Cubs to complete the July 19 trade that sent Cesar Izturis to Pittsburgh.
When the deal was made, the Cubs were supposed to receive a player to be named later. Izturis has since moved on from Pittsburgh to St. Louis.

Didn't he blow out his arm with us a few years back? Or was that someone else?

No Chad Fox blew out his arm, against the Reds I believe.

Lefty right? This has to be one of those Hendry signings that he hopes pans out.

I bet Fox's agent threw in a month supply of Bacon Burgers.

Nah I bet his agent told jimbo that signing a bum like this is tax deductable. Jimbo still has lots of bacon burgers from Glendon Rusch.

Brewers signed Mike Cameron.

It means Braun's moving to LF, which should improve their defense considerably.

Looks like the Cardinals and Blue Jays are going to swap Troy Glaus and Scott Rolen. I smell another Cub killer.

Cameron, another low .OBP guy. But a pretty good deal considering the defensive changes.

Cubs sign Shingo Takatsu

http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribu ... shing.html
The Cubs added former White Sox reliever Shingo Takatsu on Friday. Terms of the deal have not been released.

Takatsu, 39, spent all of 2004 and part of 2005 in Chicago. In 99 games in the majors with the Sox and the New York Mets, Takatsu collected 27 saves over 98 2/3 innings. He gave up 81 hits, 17 homers and 40 walks. His ERA was 3.38.

Takatsu spent the past two seasons playing in Japan.

Hopefully this signing won't be like that one guy's comment on the site. I hope they don't give him a roster spot to make Fukudome feel more comfortable.
I wish Takatsu was left handed.

They updated their article:
The Cubs signed him to a one-year minor league contract with a non-roster invitation to 2008 spring training.

Cubs, Wuertz Agree To One-Year Deal
Link

The Cubs avoided salary arbitration with their last eligible player on Monday, agreeing to a one-year, $860,000 deal with RHP Michael Wuertz.

Wuertz is 12-6 with one save and a 3.56 ERA in 220 relief appearances since making his debut in 2004.

He had asked for a raise from $415,000 to $975,000 and had been offered $750,000.

Good to see we signed Wuertz. He had one bad month (May I think) but he was lights out the other months.

Padres: Still looking in left
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7703798
The Padres, currently projecting a platoon of Scott Hairston and Chase Headley in left field, are targeting Cubs outfielder Matt Murton, a player in whom they have had longstanding interest. However, the Cubs might be reluctant to move Murton if they include an outfielder in a deal for Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts. It's even possible that Murton could be in a Roberts deal.

Murton, 26, makes sense for the Padres, considering that the team's two other regular outfielders, Jim Edmonds and Brian Giles, both are 37. The Padres could pursue a veteran free agent such as Luis Gonzalez or Reggie Sanders if they fail to land Murton; they need protection if Giles recovers slowly from microfracture surgery on his right knee.

The Orioles, still looking for a center fielder, shortstop, left-handed reliever and closer, expect to decide by the end of the month whether they will trade Roberts and left-hander Erik Bedard. Don't be surprised if Cubs right-hander Jason Marquis is part of a package for Roberts
