What was labeled as Year One is actually not Year One but the last year of a era. The Hendry/Pinella era will officially be coming to end this year. Pinella, at this point, is one of the least effective managers in all of baseball. Last night Silva was absolutely cruising. And after throwing 71 pitches, Pinella yanked him. No manager on God's green earth would have yanked Silva at that point. But Pinella did. It was a catastrophic error. On the Post-Game radio show callers went ballistic. They were seething with anger and rightfully so. It was beyond unacceptable. It was incomprehensible to yank Silva after 71 pitches with our pathetic bullpen. Pinella lost the game by himself. No small feat for a person not even on the field.
Hendry brought us a competitive team two years. But considering we never made it to a World Series, it was, in all actuality, a failure. And it came at a steep price with devastating long-term implications. The Soriano signing has proved to be crippling. One of the worst in the history of all of sports. Soriano will be entirely out of the rotation by June and probably never see regular action again.
The Hendry/Pinella era is coming to a bitter and painful end. By 2011, we will have a new GM and a new head coach. It's unfortunate to think, but 2010 and 2011 are basically shot. After 2011, when some of our big salary guys like Fukudome come of the books, we can start to heal from this nightmare. Younger prospects, like Colvin and Castro, will have the be the prime nucleus of the team.
Year One? I think not. This is Year 102.
