s has been widely assumed for months, Cubs manager Lou Piniella will announce his retirement at the end of the season, according to a report in the New York Daily News.

Piniella has hinted publicly of of his retirement multiple times in the last month alone.

The 67-year-old manager, who led the Cubs to NL Central Division titles in 2007 and 2008, is in the last year of his contract.

I think that the Cubs will give Sandberg a chance, but I look for them to go in a "bigger" direction with a guy like Torre or Valentine. My fear is that in the mean time, Sandberg is offered a job some place else and walks away from the organization forever.

My other question is this: Is Girardi that good or does having an unlimited payroll that is willing to increase at a moments notice make him look better than he is?

The team might want to give Sandberg a Spring Training to evaluate what he has. Although most of these guys have played for him already at some point. Also this team sucks. Not a good idea to give Sandberg the team and have them totally suck.
