RT @Ken_Rosenthal: Source: Vizcaino and Chapman to #Cubs for Maholm and Johnson.

Holy crap... Vizcaino was BP's #40 rated prospect going into 2012 before his injury. TREMENDOUS upside for two players the Cubs had zero commitments with before this season.

Soto for Jacob Brigham seems to be a solid deal. He could possibly be an end of the rotation guy for the rest of the season.

Be interesting to see where Dempster goes. Saw Garza to Reds and maybe Blue Jays as still a possibility.

i haven't seen that confirmed, but he was pulled from the iowa game. and...

Carrie Muskat ‏@CarrieMuskat
Don't expect OF Brett Jackson among #Cubs callups on Tuesday. RHP Coleman (2-4, 5.01) & Welington Castillo (.260, 6 HRs) are expected

i would love to see jackson hit up at the majors but he'll get more at bats at iowa. he needs to get those at bats and work on his contact.

The return from Atlanta is amazing. That's the second time Theo has fleeced them, including the Dempster fiasco. I love him so much. Vizcaino is immediately our best pitching prospect...and we got him for guys we picked up at the end of free agency! Amazing.

Garza, Soriano and Dempster could still be moved before the deadline.

if the Cubs can get even a bag of peanuts for Soriano i'd be happy. if he can make a Dempster deal to LA easier then that would be sweet. i'm sure Theo has a couple backup deals for Demp but he's trying to find the best deal by the deadline.

Not really a fleece for Chicago, Vizcaino WAS one of our top 5 pitching prospects last year but not anymore, he has stamina issues and is a 2 inning bullpen guy who went through Tommy John this year, Viz is still solid but giving him for Reed Johnson and Maholm for a playoff push is still a good deal for Atlanta. But Delgado for Dempster was a fleece

The Atlanta deal was a good deal for both sides. Neither side burned the other in this one. Both sides will be happy.

Vizcaino is probably more of a bullpen/closer prospect at this point than a starter. Small frame and has never been able to stay healthy or pitch a lot of innings. But still highly rated and we gave up basically nothing...so works for me.

I have not heard who the players are so I will with hold my comments until then. I think they did a crap job with Dempster and I personally do not like Theo, well "not like" is strong but I think he is overrated. I have never seen a GM/President pitch or hit yet so all this hoopla surronding a guy who inherited a team posied to win in Boston is silly to me. I don't recall seeing Theo be able to get rid of Todd Hundley and his contract :)

Prospects in Dempster trade...

Texas will send third baseman Christian Villanueva and right-handed pitcher Kyle Hendricks, both from high-Class A Myrtle Beach, to the Cubs.

Christian Villanueva is a "toolsey" 3B prospect...top flight defense...speed to steal bases...and some pop but does not project to be more than a ~10-15 HR hitter in the majors. Top ten prospect in Rangers system.

Kyle Hendricks college pitcher drafted 8th round of 2011 draft. Very good control...4-5 pitch pitcher...low 90s fastball. At best projects to an end of rotation pitcher in the majors.

I guess about what we could expect for a rental player. Not nearly as good as what we could have got from Atlanta...but at least he got moved and we added depth to the minors.

Villanueva was #100 on BA's top prospect list. So he's around the level of a Vitters/Sczcur type prospect, maybe a bit more regarded. Hendricks is unlikely to be much, but we'll take all the pitchers we can get.

If we wanted to, I'm sure we could sign Dempster again in the offseason (doubt Theo wants to though). So for 2-3 months of his services, this is pretty much what I expected. Seems weak after the Delgado deal, but if that went through than the Maholm trade wouldn't have happened.

from the reports earlier today it seems Dempster caved into Texas and New York as trade possibilities. One can wonder if the ATL deal didn't surface until today if he would have approved a trade there. Is ATL really not a liked destination? I can't see how 2-3 months in Atlanta differ from Arlington especially when both a playoff contenders and only rentals. Dempster was a solid player over the years and a class guy, but his leaving has left a small sour taste in my mouth.

I think if Atlanta deal would have happened today Dempster would have took it. The reason it fell apart last week was because it was still a week before the deadline and Dempster had his heart set on LA. Wanted the Cubs to continue to negotiate because they had time...problem was Atlanta had no interest in waiting.
