Just reported by Mike and Mike, Barrett traded to SD for player to be named later(not officially, but still waiting on who it was).

I actually liked Barrett, o'well, good luck Michael!

What the hell!? I just woke up and logged on and it says Barrett was traded! So we can't have those Barrett/Dye Cubs/Sox McDonald's Rivalry commercials anymore, lol. So we basically got crap for him? Good job Hendry.

How does Bowen help us? Our offense has struggled for most of the year and we trade one our 5 best hitters. Why not just play out the year and let him walk, or at least trade him for a prospect or something.

Edit: It will be interesting to see how this affects San Diego's pitching, which so far has been by far the best in baseball. We'll see if Barrett can't handle pitchers, or if he just can't handle Cubs pitchers.

I guess Barrett may have been even worse in the clubhouse than suspected. This looks like a dump just to get rid of his personality. Getting back a somewhat solid catcher and a prospect of some sorts isn't awful, but losing Barrett's offense will hurt a bit.

Not a huge surprise. I liked Barrett up until his most recent transgressions, I just hope this has a positive influence on the club. Hopefully Koyie Hill is ready for the extra work as well. His bat has been, ehm, sub-par.

We need Aramis back ASAP.

Barret was an important asset to this team until this year. He was one of the top 5 catchers in the league when he joined the cubs IMO. The ability to hit .300 and hit 20 homers. :noway:

I find it odd that this was all Chicago could get. Either it was a sheer panic move to trade him this fast or Barrett has a worse reputation around the league than I thought.

Okay, so we did get a prospect, it's not as bad as I thought. Still a badly timed move, especially in the midst of A-Ram's injury and Lee's upcoming suspension.

Kyler Burke was apparently once considered one of the top high school players in the country...but looking at his stats it doesn't look that way.

GYBE... exactly. If they wanted to move Barrett at least they could have waited until Aramis' return and after Derrek Lee's suspension. They really could have used his offense during this upcoming stretch of games.

Things must have been far worse with Barrett than any of us realized. Otherwise Hendry was an idiot for moving Barrett for what, to me at least, is next to nothing. Honestly I'd rather have Koyie Hill as our starting catcher rather than Rob Bowen.

Way to go Hendry.

The prospect is very toolsy.

Drafted #35 overall last year.. SD rushed Burke up the ladder and little quickly, but he's still a good prospect.

If being an OFer doesn't work out he has a future as a reliever.

I like the trade - Barrett was terrible.

It looks like a bad trade on a name-for-name basis, but it's not awful.

The catcher the Cubs got back is actually having a better offensive (and assumedly defensive) year than Barrett, is 5 years younger, and doesn't start fights with his teammates.

The Cubs were obviously not going to resign Barrett at the end of this year anyway, so they got what they could for him - an average-ish replacement and a prospect.

It's probably not a 'win' of a trade, but then, the Cubs were the ones dealing from weakness. They clearly really wanted to get rid of the guy.

Yeah, interesting stuff. I had mixed feelings about Barrett, sometimes he'd start problems and do poorly on offense, sometimes he'd be clutch, but hopefully we can replace him.

Makes sense SD would rush him, they're desperate for offensive help. Where would you rank him in the Cubs system? Top 5? I know we don't have a lot of high ceiling prospects.

So which would you consider me? Never in my post did I say that keeping Barrett for the longhaul was a good idea. My only issue with it was the timing. It was clear to everyone that Barrett's time in Chicago was coming to an end, I just wish we could have gotten a bit more back in a trade for one of the better offensive catchers in baseball. Also if we had decided to move him, fine, just do it after Derrek Lee has served his time and Ramirez was back off of the DL.

Like I said in my earlier post, I am fine with Koyie Hill. I think the Cubs, when at full strength, will maybe be a better team with him calling the game.
