I'm gonna have to agree w/ you on this one... Even though dempster makes it interesting... the only time that he really tends to struggle (except for today) is in non-save situations.... so i'm fine w/ leaving him in there. Marmol hasn't looked as sharp as he used to recently and i'd shy away from giving him the role this time of year... i'd give it to howry over marmol if anything, but dempster is still my closer. and if we're gonna look to the past, he had the best save % in baseball in 2005

You want a 2nd year guy closing in the heat of a playoff race? And Dempster has a better save percentage than Marmalade.

It's the most useless stat in baseball.

The point is, I want Marmol in during the most critical situations that demand our best arm. Today that was in the 9th, and there's no excuse for Marmol not getting in today's game after he threw 1/3 of an inning yesterday.

Dempster is a big rally killer.
We had a 2 game win streak in the bag and all the momentum.
He did this twice Vs the Mets giving up big innings in the 9th.

Oh and I trust Marmol more than Dempster in a playoff race.
Dempster never can come thru in the clutch while Marmol has proven he can.

No doubts about it.

My only concern is, is there enough time to ease him into that position? If anything is going to get done it should be now. Kinda like the Whitesox world series year when Jenks stepped in towards the end of the year. I don't think Marmol can come in during the playoffs and succeed. He would have to be "fitted" for the role. Its a high intensity position as it is, the playoffs only magnify the situation.

LOL, he's had two save chances. You really think that's an accurate sample size?

And you really think that because some guy arbitrarily decided that a lead of 3 or less constitutes a save oppurtunity, we should base all our reliever appearances around this stupid stat?

I don't care who gets saves. Sometimes the 9th is the most important inning, sometimes it isn't. I'm for Marmol being in the game when it matters the most, as he's proven to be by far our best reliever. Some games, that means coming in the 7th in a bases loaded jam. Other games, it means closing it out.

I don't want a manager who follows an exact set of rules of when to bring in certain relievers depending on the lead and inning. I want a manager who fluidly assesses the individual situations and puts in the best arm for that specific time. It seems like a very logical concept, but most MLB managers are slaves to the save stat.
