OK, so this seems like the appropriate place to post my recollections of the '84 post-clinching celebration. Yes, Harry Caray was totally smashed on champagne but that was nothing new. I think he yelled, "we're gonna get loaded tonight!" and tilted the bottle back for a huge swig. Steve Stone was interviewing guys, I think, and lots of guys were happy but fairly normal. But then it came time for Lee Smith's interview.

He had a super-deep voice and some kind of accent, so that it was kind of hard to understand him. But midway through the interview Leon Durham came up behind him and started dousing him with champagne. Smith squinched up his eyes and shoulders and shouted, "oh, man, not m'fro, not m'fro!" And of course the bubbly just kept on coming, and the camera panned away.

Might not sound all that great, but let me tell you it was awesome. I watched the VHS tape of that game and celebration more times than I can recount, over a period of many years, every time I needed a big pick-me-up. Simply classic.

Hmm. I almost never get quoted in sigs so I should be flattered. But I hope that people don't start thinking that I'm in a minstrel show or anything. Really, I'm quite progressive. Really.

Shouldn't you be tending your afro Ben?

I'm sorry but you're my Miltpalaciofanclub. But the opposite. Since all of your posts are awesome I have to look far and wide for ridiculous quotes. I'm entirely sorry but that space is Ben B.'s for as far as I can see.
