Johan Santana Rumor...distant rumor

I saw this on another message board:

Quote:
The Mets are said by rival executives to badly want Santana, but they have taken Jose Reyes and David Wright off the table and there is serious doubt if they have the wherewithal to make a deal unless the Twins have a particularly high regard for Carlos Gomez and Mike Pelfrey. A young center fielder such as Gomez or Cabrera is a must in this trade as the Twins look to replace Torii Hunter, who recently signed with the Angels. The Red Sox (Jacoby Ellsbury/Coco Crisp), the Dodgers (Matt Kemp) and the Angels (Reggie Willets) are all expected to vie for Santana, and an NL executive said to watch out for the Cubs (Felix Pie) and perhaps the Mariners (Adam Jones).

You would think that if the Cubs were to trade for Santana the pieces involved would have to start with Pie, Hill, and possibly even Marmol.

Regardless, Hendry doesn't have the balls.

Not going to happen. The Yankees have so much more to offer.

I completely agree, but at the same time, it sure is fun to think about having a rotation starting with Santana, Zambrano, and Lilly. Then let Marquis, Dempster, Prior, Marshall, and Hart battle it out for the 4th and 5th spot.

I can dream.

Yankees have 3 pitchers ready to step up to the Majors, they also have a slue of outfielders and more pitchers waiting in the minors.

Plus the new regime would love to make, probably, the biggest splash they possibly could. Adding Santana to that team would give the Yanks a guaranteed 20 more wins.

Are you kidding me?

I hate the Yankees. I love me some Mets.

The Red Sox are rumored to be the front runners offering Coco Crisp, Jon Lester, and one of their best infield prospects. Forgot his name.

Anyways, we can offer more than that.

Pie, Marmol, Hart/Vitters/???

I'd do that in a heartbeat.

We can't deal Vitters until next summer. I think Marmol would really be valuable to them. They could deal Joe Nathan and still have an amazing bullpen with cheap players. But we don't have the fontline starter they're going to want.

Sounds like its going to be the red sox, but Santana & Big Z would be a great 1-2 punch. Get it done ...........

I'd love to get Santana, but other teams have more to give than us. The Yanks definitely have more than us, and they're not the front runners, so what does that tell you.

Plus I don't think we have a strong enough lineup, defensively, to be able to give up players in a Santana deal and still be competitive. We'd have lots of offense, which could potentially produce lots of runs, but they could also be dry for a long period of time.

I would trade Z, plus other for Santana though. Definitely.

Z, Pie, and a minor leaguer.

Z has a $91.5 million contract. Twins want cheap players to keep their payroll down. If they were willing to spend like that for a starter, they would've been able to work out an extension with Johan.

Honestly, it's not worth it for what it would cost us. We don't have the prospects Boston and New York do, we'd have to literally give up everything of value we have. I know Santana's the best pitcher in baseball, but it's too much to put on one guy who could blow out his arm tomorrow.
