The backup centerfielder Lou wants...

May come with Reed Johnson.

Toronto dropped him today. In 2006 he batted .319 with a .390 on base percentage. He hits left handed pitching very well. Don't waste your time trading prospects for Marlon Byrd type players.

reed would be a nice pickup for you guys, even though he struggled in 07 coming off the DL he is still a decent hitter. :D

Why do you think he can play CF? He's had very few games there.

He has played 64 there and has yet to make an error. If Ronny Cedeno is being tried for center field then I would be willing to give this guy a shot. Plus he would be the backup to Pie, so he wouldn't be starting everyday.

The Cubs are not looking for any backup left fielder or right fielder. They want a righthanded center fielder to take at bats away from Pie.

Yup the corners are backed up by Murton, Ward and Derosa.

We need a solid Righty CF...and Im very surprised we havent addressed it a week before the season, especially since Fuld hasnt blown anyone away this spring.

I hear you, but Wrigley can be a tough OF to handle. I think they'd want to bring in a guy who's at least been a regular CF in his career, rather than going through the adjustment of getting used to the position in a new park.

I'm actually a fan of Reed, seen him play a lot since I watch so many Toronto games. I just don't think we can assume he'd be a solid CF. Even with his speed, it's a much more demanding job than a corner spot.

I bet Reed ends up in St. Louis. They got rid of Edmonds out there and have Colby Rasmus but I doubt he is ready yet. Johnson would be a good pick-up for them.

Reed's great defensively and in 06 he had a great offensive campaign. In 07 however, he declined offensively and I think he's got some serious health issues because I've got no idea why JP released him...

Carrie Muskat giving conformation to talks? Or Sam Smith-like speculation?

http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/articl ... p&c_id=chc
The Cubs have looked at Texas' Marlon Byrd, who started in right field on Monday against them, but were believed to be leaning more toward Reed Johnson, who was released by the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday. He batted .236 last year with the Blue Jays, but was bothered by a back problems.

I wouldn't mind Johnson as a back-up though. If Pie goes down or just needs a rest, Johnson would fill in better than Fuld would.

We're hearing that no team is more interested in recently released Toronto outfielder Reed Johnson than the Cubs, assuming he clears waivers Tuesday. Two baseball men we spoke with Monday described Johnson as "the perfect fit" for the Cubs, who have looked diligently for a right-handed bat off the bench who can play center field. If the Cubs do reel in Johnson, it could free them to trade Matt Murton in the next few days. We're hearing that the Mets, who have scouted Johnson extensively, are not interested.
