''You look at his contribution last year, it's darn good,'' Piniella said. ''We're going to give him some playing time at shortstop -- we'll see in spring training if he can do that -- and if not, depending on what we do or don't do, we'll give him some [more] playing time at second.''
Finally Lou gets some sense. Fontenot has a 150 point higher slugging percentage and gets the job done at the plate. While Theriot had a great season it's probably his peak season as a major leaguer and he is just a singles hitter.
You might have to question how Fontenot will play shortstop, but Theriot's range and arm are poor to begin with, and you have to believe Fontenot's offense will make up for any defensive hits the Cubs take.
I don't know how much Fontenot will play at shortstop much but the good news is Piniella wants to play little Mikey more.
