Cubs likely won't offer Wood arbitration

The latest from Miles is that the Cubs probably won't offer Kerry arbitration.
This reinforces the "fixed payroll" theory. The Cubs don't want to take the chance that Kerry accepts (maybe a $8 million contract for the year) when they still have other areas to address (possibly Peavy or an outfielder).
The problem is in this scenario, we don't get any draft picks when Wood signs with another team. This is where the bad contracts of Soriano/Fukudome/etc. kill us. A 1 year deal for Wood would be awesome, but apparently we can't afford to make that a possibility. And because of that we'll lose him for nothing. Actually, we'll lose him AND Ceda AND get worse with Kevin Gregg. To save money.
It looks like the past two years of reckless spending is over boys.
