Cubs sign Aaron Miles *Update*- DeRosa traded!

The Cubs agreed to terms with versatile free agent infielder Aaron Miles on a two-year, $4.9 million contract, adding important depth to the middle infield.
Miles, a switch-hitter who spent the past three seasons with St. Louis, played seven positions for the Cardinals last season, primarily second base (49 starts) and shortstop (24).

A career .289 hitter, Miles, 32, hit .317 with a .355 on-base percentage in 134 games last season. He hit almost exactly the same from both sides of the plate (.315 left, .317 right).
The deal pays Miles $2.2 million in 2009 and $2.7 million in 2010.
The Cleveland Indians also reportedly are close to acquiring Mark DeRosa in a move that would give the Cubs payroll flexibility, possibly to finalize a deal for Milton Bradley.

I heard Levine report that DeRo could be going to Cleveland for 3 minor leaguers. This must bring some truth to the apparent Bradley signing and Peavy talks.

Our supersub is a Cub no more. According to Bruce he has been traded for pitchers Jeff Stevens, Chris Archer, and some other pitcher. This clears about 5 million in salary.

so who are we all going to keep?

would the pitchers from the Dero trade be moved on to get Peavy, and we keep Miles?

That's what I'm thinking. San Diego wanted prospects back that we didn't have. Hopefully we can now keep Vitters/Marshall while still getting Peavy but we'll see.

I would assume so. Miles would probably be Fontenot and Theriot's backup at SS/2B. I've never heard of these prospects but hopefully they are some pieces Towers wanted.

This just in. The Cleveland Indians are officially my second favorite team. Two of my favorite Cubs are there now. :(

And this better mean Bradley and Peavy or I will be pissed.

We now have 4 middle infielders unless cedeno is going to be part of the "peavy deal"

Well My favorite cubbie is gone. Good thing I didnt buy his Jersey last yr.

Thanks for everything DeRo! and as Posey said if trading DeRo doesnt equal Peavy I will be uber pissed.

would we have been able to sign Bradley without clearing money?

if so then this is all about making room for Peavy's contract

but since the Bradley deal has been done for a while, maybe they were waiting for these moves to be made, hopefully both will be attained

Derosa was great last year. I agree with everyone that if this trade doesn't equal Bradley and Peavy then I will be upset.

If both arent attained it would be stupid for Hendry to trade away depth and weaken our bench by trading Derosa for the one thing we suck at...developing prospects.

John Gaub -- Class A -- 100 K in 64 innings...
Chris Archer -- Class A -- young guy, only 19 years old...don't know much about him
Jeff Stevens -- Class AA -- another high strike-out guy with 4 quality pitchers. Closer for Olympic team in Beijing. Best pitcher of the three currently and could make a roster outright this year.

I don't know...I thought the Padres wanted MLB ready pitching? This doesn't look like it...

But Jimbo wouldnt trade DeRo for prospects. He is to under fire and Dero is to popular to be traded for salary concerns. Im not saying this leads to Peavy, but something else is in the works.

maybe he's is going to trade the prospects for some mlb ready pithcing and then trade them to the padres
roundabout way of getting it done, but if he can pull it off....

Yeah DeRosa needed to go. He's probably never going to repeat the year he had last year. Dump him for prospects while you can.
