2009: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Post#1 » by SpinninHouse » Mon Jun 8, 2009 1:55 am

Well, it's June 7th and we're 3.5 games out of 1st. Considering how terrible we've played and injuries to Aramis Ramirez, Rich Harden, Carlos Zambrano and Milton Bradley -- we should be considered extremely lucky. Here is a breakdown of the good, the bad, and the oh so ugly.

The Good:

Guzman -- has been absolutely incredible. a perfect bridge guy out of the bullpen.
Lilly -- our best starter. should definitely pitch in Game 1 if we make the playoffs.
Wells -- has been nothing short of brilliant. his 2-hitter against Atlanta was spectacular.
Fukudome -- has a .420 OBP so far. we'll revisit this in August.

The Bad:

Dempster -- his newborn daughter's tragic health issues understandably have distracted him.
Bradley -- will most likely finish with a 370-.380 OBP but he'll end up missing 50+ games.
Lee --was absolutely horrific until about 10 days ago.
Heilman --good effort tonight but has been miserable far too many times this year.

The Ugly:

Soriano --hit a HR tonight but is batting .239 with a .300 OBP. swings at everything.
Gregg --oh God he's terrible.
Cotts --no longer in the majors and never will be again. but was UGLY this year. UGLY.
Soto --how can somebody go from being so good to so bad in one year?

Anyways it's a really long season. Long enough to make another thread like this in 3 months and have every person listed to be in a different category. 3.5 games out of first after playing so terrible is a huge relief. Hopefully we can take the Houston series and come back to Wrigley with a nice homestand.

I'd put Bradley in the ugly column. He just hasn't been worth the 30 million we paid him so far. I'd put Gregg in the bad column. Other than that I agree with the rest.

Considering the Cubs are 2 games over .500 and only 3.5 games out, I'm relatively optimistic. There have been many injuries and a lot of guys who have underachieved thus far. The Good you listed makes me really happy, especially Wells and Guzman.

The Cubs suck this year. They're not going anywhere. I rarely bother watching them anymore, because they just piss me off. It's too bad too, because they're actually pitching pretty well. But it's pretty obvious they won't be putting runs up with regularity, and even if they somehow turned it around, they look like the sort that would fall silent again in the playoffs.

I'm still holding out hope. The Cubs have the top starters ERA in the NL and the bullpen is performing better with Ascanio and Guzman. The Cubs offense as a whole has underperformed. Soto looks better recently, and Soriano/Bradley are bound to start hitting. Bradley for sure, the guy is a pure hitter. A-Ram will boost our offense if he comes back after the All-Star break.

We are only 2.5 games out which is crazy considering how badly the Cubs have played.
