Only 2 reasons why he might not be axed:
1) Ricketts might blame the losing on the impending sale (Hendry had his hands tied behind his back this offseason). Shouldn't be the case. The sale of the Cubs had nothing to do with the horrible contracts of Soriano, Miles, Bradley, Zambrano, Dempster, etc.
2) Ricketts might not want to let him go because his contract runs for a few more years. Probably the most likely scenario if they were to keep him for at least 1 more year.

He does make a good point when talking about preseason expectations and how they must of thought he put the team in a good position to succeed, however, I don't think anyone was too thrilled with Gregg and Milton to begin with along with getting rid of Derosa so it's kind of a moot point.

I thought Hendry deliberately made the team worse as part of the BS about being more left-handed when they in fact just choked under the pressure.

And losing Wood and DeRosa and then having the manager bring up a really bad chemistry isn't very good.

The Cubs should be doing much better, but last year, to me, they had a better team.

I've never heard of a second basemen being handed a job on a possible world series team, unproven, just because he bats left-handed.

Lou also did not play the best players, he played more veterans, like many coaches and managers in many leagues.

Brenly stated the obvious, if Soriano isn't hitting, he's just killing you. You can live with his foibles IF he is hitting.

Last note to Hendry - Bradley isn't, and hasn't ever been, a run producer. Who you crappin'?

They can keep Hendry for his "baseball ties," but we need to Isiah Thomas him and move him to a consultant role. He absolutely can not be the GM of this team any longer. The guy needs to just be fired for the Soriano contract. Look at it this way. I wont blame him for the Milton deal, Bradley came off a big time contract year and looked the most attractive(albeit I would have probably taken Dunn). Giving Soriano superstar money was (Please Use More Appropriate Word). Signing Aaron Miles for 2yrs. Overpaying for Fukudome and Bradley when there was no market. He had to extend Zambrano so I wont blame him for that.

His pros have been little garbage pickups(meaning not much was given up) like Harden, Baker, Edmonds, Reed Johnson.

IMO I would prefer we stop spending to get out of a rut. We need to look to deal Derrek Lee this winter. Possibly Bradley although I wouldnt mind giving him one more chance. Let Harden and Grabow go for the picks. and just look to stock pile young proven talent or prospects by trading off assets like Ted Lilly or Zambrano. I just dont see this team being tweaked enough to win a world series. Maybe you give it half a season, but with Lee and Lilly being expiring deals you better get something for them before they leave.

Hendry's a mediocre GM. He's done a lot of moves that most people did not like that worked out like Lilly, initially signing DeRosa, and we have brought some impact prospects in like Soto, Marmol, Wells, and Z several years ago. Speaking of Soto doesn't anyone else think that Pudge would be a perfect backup for him. He could really help him get his head straight and get in shape. He's already in a part-time/backup role with Texas. Absolutely do not do the rebuild option. In a couple of years Lee and Lilly will be gone any ways and then you put in the young players. If you add Figgins and Scutaro or any two of the middle infielders and dump Fontenot, Miles, and Theriot for prospects and someone like Aubrey Huff to come off the bench and play part-time you've already fixed a ton of hitting problems. And if you add Rafael Soriano you've got one of the nastiest when on 1-2 SU Closer combos in him and Marmol. You take the picks for Gregg. Try and resign Harden to something like a 3 year, 22 million dollar deal with tremendous incentives for innings pitched, and # of games started. If he turns an offer like that down go after Duchscherer, Hudson, maybe Millwood, or Lackey/Washburn to replace and if that all fails you get draft picks and maybe put Gorzo or someone from the system in the 5th starter role. And when all of this dealing is done you end with 6 or 7 prospects from draft picks and deals and end of with great pieces. Also on the farm system- our farm system has improved a lot this year, Burke, Castro, Lee, and Colvin have all had breakout years and Jackson looks like he'll be a nice player and not to mention other success stories and obviously Vitters. I know I'll take a lot of flack for this plan but boldness could help this team. Sheik you are completely wrong about Bradley and especially Fuku. Fuku was getting great offers from SD and LA and several other teams were interested in him. If I'm right the Pads might have offered more money. Also Bradley was being chased by TB and could have resigned with Texas. People think Hendry's a terrible GM but be grateful we don't have Dayton Moore, guy hands out contracts to mediocre players with no thought whatsoever, signed Meche, Guillen, Bloomquist to huge contracts, has Crisp, Guillen, DeJesus, Meche, Betancourt, Farnsworth, and Cruz on huge contracts no to mention him giving up two top prospects for Betancourt whom Keith Law deems "the worst player ever". All this and they still absolutely suck! Sorry to make everyone read this much.

Hendry really has had 2 good seasons and that was 2003 and 2008. Everything he did worked out. Signing Reed Johnson, signing Jim Edmonds despite the fanbase not liking it. He did make a nice move in 2007 signing Lilly and DeRosa but the Soriano signing outweighs those by a ton. The 2002 offseason and 2003 season were really good capped off by the Aramis trade.

Thats all Im saying. He has definitely made some good moves. The ones you mentioned and I would add the Harden deal as one of his best as well. However, stud superstar money to Soriano is just unacceptable. Our overall farm direction is something I also disagree with. We have drafted better the last couple of years, but we need to not rush pitchers and stop trying to gamble on the upside of converting a reliever to a starter. Only time will tell what will become of our 3 best pitching prospects (Shark, Cashner and Jackson), but all 3 might be better suited as relievers...I guess we will see.

We have a combined 40 mil committed to 3 players that just arent producing.

edit: signing Dumpster after a fluke season and then saying we dont have payroll to add Peavy. Someone would have signed Dempster and we would have netted draft picks. Or we would have seen that it was a fluke and not invested this much money into him.

As far as the Fukudome and Bradley deals. I highly doubt a conservative organization like San Diego was going to shell out 10+ mil for Fukudome and being as every other OF Bradley was competing with went for significantly less...Hendry overpaid for both, there is no denying that. Ibanez, Dunn, Abreu all went for less.

Soriano, selling Nolasco and Pinto for 1yr of JP, Ceda for Gregg, trading DeRo for a platoon of Aaron Miles and Fontenot, hiring Dusty...I could go on. Hendry needs to be fired.

The Padres are facing determined competition from the Cubs for Japanese outfielder Kosuke Fukudome. Growing indications yesterday had the Cubs willing to guarantee Fukudome close to $50 million. The Padres have offered more than $10 million per year, perhaps well above that amount, over at least three years.- look

Dunn went for the same amount in one less year. If Bradley's option doesn't kick in (if he's hurt next year), it'll be the same deal. And Ibanez signed for more (3/$33 million).

Both the Padres and White Sox were willing to give similiar money to Fukudome. Plus, he's been one of the best Centre Fielder's in the majors this year, so I have no problem with his money right now.

Whoever signed was going to have to pay at least 10 million a year. He has had a pretty good year and was worth it however.
