No it triggers the hard cap it doesn't automatically put you up against it. So if you had a bunch of cap space then you would still have that cap space, but it limits the value of exceptions and bird rights.

What does triggering the hard cap actually do though

So let's say that when the hard cap was triggered and the Heat were only 5 mil beneath the hard cap, it means that even with bird rights and exceptions the Heat cannot spend more than that 5 mil on filling out the roster. And there are place holder salaries in place for up to 14 players at the rookie min and that counts against the hard cap.

So what happens if you do the deal after you you use all your bird rights and exceptions?

You get in the discussion. There maybe a move to be made for the Heat to benefit as a third team option. Just like Kyrie, even if you are not interested in him you get in the room to see how you can benefit from it.

I agree but why would Pat agree?

Pat may not have actually agreed to anything, it could just be Brunson's team put info out there to drive up the market.

Knicks have Leon Rose in the Front Office who has known Jalen Brunson his whole life. His Dad, Rick Brunson, is also now an Assistant under Thibs.

He's going to New York.

Not entirely sure, but regardless of when the hard cap is triggered it is a firm, or hard, line that forces the organization to adapt and that could mean that deals agreed to in theory but not finalized are not able to be completed as planned.

I'm pretty sure you simply can't acquire someone via sign and trade, or have access to those certain exceptions, if you are over the tax apron # which is about $155M this year.

I agree but why would Pat agree?

Cause he’s a nice guy. Likes to build the relationship just in case something happens in the future. Similar to the Aldridge meeting.

Let's be serious here Brunson taking meetings with teams is all for show so that the Knicks don't get hit with tampering charges

Leverage for what? Knicks have cleared the space. Mavs want him back. He already has his bidding war. What would a team with no cap space add to the proceedings? Does he want a piece of the team? His dad gets a raise from the Knicks?

This is about avoiding tampering or he wants to know if the Heat would trade Lowry and make him the starting PG. Jimmy let the Heat know he wanted to be in Miami when the Rockets were the perceived favorites and then the Heat moved heaven and earth to get it to happen. Brunson would have to give the Heat the word and they would make it happen again.
