Re: Deni Avdija
If Deni is Beal's little buddy now, I guess that means Deni's not getting traded if Beal sticks around?
And with us going to Japan next year, Rui also not getting traded.
Kuz grew on me a lot this year but it's not looking too good for him right now.

Makes sense to sell high on Kuz. You want to pay him $20M a season?
Or does it make sense to keep Rui on a 4 year $55M-$65M extension?

Kuz is from Flint, MI. I wonder if the Pistons might have some interest?
Tre Johnson is the future of the Wizards.

Re: Deni Avdija
How did Kuz go from Flint to Utah for college, lol. Take what you can get for scholarships, but that is hilarious.
Pistons are rebuilding and I think want to unload Grant already so I don't know if they'd want Kuzma.

I'm sure we'll be seeing hundreds of Deni shooting highlights over the summer.

Hopefully we'll see a more aggressive Deni who shoots good looks rather than make an extra pass

That's something you can't teach. Confidence. If he can get confident in his shot, and improves his handle, hopefully that will translate into a more confident player.

I felt that Avdija was taking the shot when available, at least throughout the 2nd half of the season. He actually ended up with the same number of 3PA's per possession as Rui, despite Avdija having much more incentive to pump-fake-and-drive (because he is a worse 3P shooter and a better playmaker).

The thing that would encourage me would be him working two things: His left hand drive
and explosiveness under the basket.

Re: Deni Avdija
I think this is a very big year for Avdija. He needs to show improvement in his shooting. His first two years in the league he has shot 31.5% and 31.7% from 3. This is simply not going to get it done. And most of these 3's aren't even contested. If he doesn't show improvement in year 3 you really have to wonder about the team's long-term commitment to him.

How much is going to get it done? 35%? 40%?

League average would be a start.

Agreed. Avdija doesn't have to nail 3's at an extremely high percentage in order to stay on the floor, because he does so many other things well. But he has to at least not be a liability where teams cheat off of him. 35% would do it.

40% would be a dream. At this point, I would settle for improvement. 34%. We aren't talking about Avdija making contested 3's or 3's off the dribble. Teams will help off of him and he will be open. But it goes to another point. Sheppard needs to make a trade and consolidate the forward position. We simply have too many forwards. If we don't make a trade and Avdija starts out slow. It's easy to imagine that he could be out of the rotation completely.

If you want to consolidate the forwards the guy you move is Kuzma, not a 21 year old that's teasing potential and actually still has room to grow.
Kuzma has got a player option for next year and he's looking to get paid. The Wizards do not need to be the team holding the bag for a less mediocre forward.

Re: Deni Avdija
I’m encouraged by the videos. It looks like Deni has changed his basic set up on his jumper. His shoulders are no longer completely square to the basket. This will let him get off his j more quickly, attack close outs better and mainly keep him in rhythm.

Hard to argue with that.
But, let me ask you: what if "...we don't make a trade and" Rui "starts out slow"?
Is it "easy to imagine that Rui could be out of the rotation completely"?
Here's another question: on a per-40-minute basis, which of the following 4 Wizards forwards produced the most for the team?
Kyle Kuzma
Anthony Gill
Rui Hachimura
Deni Avdija
Not asking "who was the most important player?" Not even, "who is likely to be the best player long term?" Just something simple -- per 40 minutes, which of the 4 produced the best overall numbers & had the biggest positive impact on defense?
