But we can make educated guesses about health. Who is more likely to play in more games over the next 2 years?

Player A
-Will be 34 when the season starts
-Has averaged 30 games played over the course of the past 3 years, following surgery to repair a torn achilles
-Is really skinny, in his arms, legs and mid-section

Player B
-25 yrs old, entering his prime
-Just did impressive under water workout. Looks like he's ready to compete in a freaking decathlon
-Has averaged 60 games per season over the past 3 seasons (so exactly double KD's availability over the past 3 seasons)
-Played in all 24 of the team's playoff games in 2022
-Is built as strong and solid as can be

Not factoring injury risk or age (age 34 KD is past his prime, his best days are behind him, will start declining soon vs JB age 25, entering his prime and still getting better).

While JB might leave at the end of his contract in 2 years, he also might stay for another 5+ years.

There's also other factors to consider, so trying to simplify it as much as you did in your post is not reality. Other factors:
-JB has been here for 6 years. We know what the chemistry is like with him on this team. We have no idea what it would be like with KD
-the trade is not JB for KD straight up, so we should really stop talking about it as such. The salaries don't match and the nets wouldn't accept the offer. It's JB + other good players + picks for KD. If we give up JB + 2 other rotation players (like white or smart + Grant for example) now we go from a team that's 10 deep to a team that's 8 deep. And as we all know, there's basically no good players available on the free agent market. How are we gonna get through a season with 8 guys? If anyone goes down with an injury, we're f&cked. And we have guys like rob and brogdon who get hurt a lot, we have 36 year old Al, etc.

KD is such a unicorn..he came off injury and put up regular season efficiency numbers that Tatum and Jaylen will never match once in their entire careers..that's the risk reward you are trading for. When healthy concensus to 5 NBA player in the league. Period.

If it's Jaylen white filler Jaylen Smart filler..I'd do it.

In a vaccuum everyone should answer yes. I mean?

Many circumstances make me feel meh about adding KD, his persona, his history etcetera,.. but come on? We’re instant title favorites if that trade occurs. Why would you say no to that?

There’s so many uncertainties & if you use health or age you should consider JB’s chronic knee problems, his tendency to always think in his own tunnel, let me call it Kyrie-esque mini light so I certainly see a Ray Allen exit more than possible and you could just add a top 3 player in Durant? Just gotta go for it if you take a neutral look. What do we do if we hold onto this core & get busted by a healthy Bucks team? What is JB/JT gonna do when we dont win the title next year? Gotta try to field the best team as possible & see from there IMO, all sentiments aside.

The nay-sayers should at least look at both sides on this one because going the sentimental way is never the way to look at trades like this. Remember the sentiment about Al Jefferson?

I’m making that trade. I don’t see Jaylen extending here. And Durant has the kind of old man game that will age well. As long as he’s happy here, I think he’s the better player over the next four years, and definitely the next 2.

Now if Jaylen wants to extend here, no way would I trade him for Durant.

You think Jaylen sticks around in 2 years if they don’t trade him?

he's under contract for 2 more years. As it stands today, Vegas has boston as the 2023 title favorites. You think JB is going anywhere if we win 2 titles before he hits free agency?

I think he’s gone no matter what

Question: Whose game compliments KD's game better, JB or JT's?

I would say that Brown is a better fit with KD than Tatum. Yet, Tatum is a higher value player than Brown.

Would the Celtic be better off exploring a trade of Tatum + other assets for KD instead of Brown + assets for KD?

I feel conflicted by this whole topic as I see value and greatness in KD, Brown and Tatum.

You keep the guy whose the much better player and two years younger.

Tatum’s game compliments Durant better anyways, as he’s WAY more versatile.

There are a number of things that I was considering exploring in this post, but first and foremost, you want to trade Tatum PLUS OTHER ASSETS for KD? Like, you don't think Tatum is enough to get it done, and the Nets would require more from us? I sincerely want you to propose a trade centered around Tatum for KD, post it on the trades board, and see what leaguewide fans think. Like, genuinely, sincerely, please do this.

Yup, I agree, Tatum might (hes not there yet) get to consistent top 5 status over the next few years. TO move him for KD is criminal, let alone more assets over and above Tatum.

It is amazing how people know that Tatum wants to be here long term but Brown is going elsewhere in 2 years, impressive sources

Obviously its speculation, but I assume Tatum is at least under contract for longer than 2 years, which may help in the comparison

Tatum will get offered the supermax in year 4 of his current deal whereas Jaylen is 100% guaranteed to go on free agency. Tatum can get like $100 mil. more for signing with Boston over signing as a free agent deal elsewhere AND he gets to secure this bag a year early. That's a powerful incentive that Tatum is unlikely to turn down.

Or maybe it has nothing to do with Jaylen leaving and they just want to upgrade the team which KD unquestionably does

Yeah I still think it's >50% chance he stays if he's still on the team when he comes up for free agency. We can offer the most money and will probably still have a competitive team, and inertia is powerful. I think it's kind of less likely he remains so preoccupied on being offered in a trade for one of the best players in the league for two full years that he wouldn't consider re-signing. I just think KD is a much better player and would love to have him.

I don't want KD for a warm bucket of spit. Seriously. But then again that's that old fashioned Celtics Pride of mine talking. That Celtics Pride that is apparently deader than a **** door nail. Hey it's from a bygone era. Forget about it. It's done. Gone. Today is all that matters. The Celtics are no different than any ofher NBA team. And that apparently includes SAC, Pelicans, Thunder.....etc. Pride in history, accomplishment, is so so so....**** old. Lets try to assemble an allstar team and win rings. Why not? This newer generation of Celtics fan really **** sucks. And I mean really. Pride is really dead.

Changed my mind. A Tatum-Brown led offense is always going to be crippled by a lack of floor IQ and stagnant, poor decision making under pressure. Thats not going to change, the ball is always going to run through them. I betcha Brad coaching this team and now GMing it is well aware of that. KD's health/age is a major gamble. However he can take a huge weight off Tatum and allow him to be a killer 1b/2nd option and frankly he adds a brain to our offense that it hasn't had in years. One of Brown/Tatum was supposed to be dealt for Davis all along. Well Durant is better and there are no guarantees in this league anyway. Finish the rebuild the way it was intended and let the chips fall where they may.

The major difference aside form supermax considerations, is that you can offer Tatum a max extension 2 year before his deal ends and you’ll know either way. With brown, because of his current contract, there’s no extension possible that makes sense so he WILL be an unrestricted free agent. He could very well stay but the risk is inherently greater

I think Brogdon helps with that though.
