i honestly don't know why players go to pro runs other than the rare time to "stretch their legs", so to speak. they're almost always playing below nba competition and nobody really tries, so it's like a glorified pickup game. there's little structure and it's mostly all 10 players taking their turns to go 1v1 against their defender.

personally i think players would be much better off using those days to work individually on their skills, but that's just me. like you pointed out scottie was clearly playing below his ability (at like 30%?) so i don't know how that benefits him in any way.

I disagree. I played a lot of basketball growing up and there's only so much individual training you can do.

Those pick up games (even if below competition) actually do a lot of good for you in my opinion because you try things you normally wouldn't, especially the things you are trying to master. Those are the times you do them and get comfortable and gain confidence which are key. Scottie for example needs to get more comfortable with his 3 point shot and launching it quicker (not only by himself but within an offense). He did that here. Theres a reason why our whole team is here from young guys to vets. Scrimmages help to get better.

Probably the same way light sparring benefits fighters, it allows you to work on your skills against resistance and try things that you might not necessarily do in high level competition.

you just said an individual training method in boxing is why nba players would benefit from pro runs?

when players train "individually" they have trainers that simulate the resistance you're referring to.

why do you think you rarely see footage of the top players in the league at pro runs? there's very little to gain from beating much lesser players, even if you're trying new things.

Do you know what the word sparring means?

They have trainers who provide resistance for a specific move or drill, it's not the same as trying it during the flow of an actual game.

I have no idea what you're talking about, I've seen footage of All Star caliber NBA players at pro runs for years.

pickup games aren't actual games though. trainers can at least closer simulate game defense, because in pick up games defenders don't care.

and my memory might be slipping but i can't remember guys like embiid, giannis, jokic, curry, kawhi, etc. etc. etc. at pro runs. lebron just played in the drew league for his first time in ten years. i just don't see how a player being defended by a player who isn't in the league is beneficial for these guys.

The one thing you take away from this is Scottie is talking non stop. That's the biggest takeaway for me

I think you're overstating how little the defenders care. It's often the non NBA guys who feel like they have something prove and really try to D up on NBA guys.

I can rattle off names of guys like KD, Morant, Tatum, DeRozan, Harden, Paul, PG13, and Steph Curry just did the SF-Pro Am like two years ago.

Wow he looks a lot smoother hitting jumpers. pulling up from 3 and hitting a tough step back

That shot against Kuzma was the smoothest I’ve ever seen from Scottie. Much more fluid

Pro Am highlights. Definitely working on his shot creation skills.
