In retrospect….it was an insane risk to trade the #1 pick to 76ers instead of taking Tatum #1.

1. Jayson Tatum, Boston Celtics
Last week’s ranking: No. 2
Season stats: 31.6 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 4.5 apg
Tatum showed he was king of the court as the Prince and Princess of Wales sat courtside Wednesday to watch him drill eight 3-pointers as part of a season-high 49 points in a win against the Miami Heat. The performance marked Tatum’s third 40-point game of the season as Boston’s top-rated offense powered the team’s fifth straight win. Tatum is the sixth player in NBA history to have multiple games with 45 points or more with 10 or more rebounds while only committing one turnover or fewer, joining the company of Anthony Davis (six such games), Michael Jordan (three), Antetokounmpo (three), Kobe Bryant (two) and Carmelo Anthony (two).

(I honestly don't know Luka is so high in these MVP rankings. He's an incredible scorer and was the MVP favorite before the season started. But the point of playing NBA basketball is to win the game, so I look at MVP as "most valuable to winning." Luka's team is in 11th place in the West.)

Couldn’t agree more. If the Celtics finish with the best record in the league it would be a sham to give anyone else MVP. Tatum is all over total points and +/- totals.

I know its only 12 games for him, and I know the Celtics didn't really "draft" him because the trade was already agreed to, but seeing Desmond Bane on that list hurts, especially because part of that trade was just salary relief.

Just to a dump a player we ended up bringing back lol.

Was +667 last year when only Bridges (+576) and Curry (+509) were even above +500. Yes some of that is the Boston being awesome but I'm not sure people outside of Boston fans realize how much he drives winning.

Yeah it's crazy to watch in real time when you look for it. People have mentioned it a good bit here and it really is pronounced. Dude is a big time winner with crazy impact.

Everyone agrees this team is stacked, and yet, the picture below is the teams net rating with those players OFF the floor. When Tatum is off the court, our net rating would be worse than all but 7 teams this season, so far.

Yeah under-rated piece is almost everyone on the team is a low volume scorer, outside Tatum, Brown and Brogdon. Brown's areas of limitations have been discussed ad nauseum, Brogdon's the most well-rounded other guy on the team.
Outside that, they are a great collection of complimentary guys but zero dynamic offensive dudes. We've traded in Danny's love of the creative scorer for a real team (which is good), but it leaves Tatum as the big time straw that stirs the drink. As great as this club has been, you can see why they targeted Gallo when you look at the per possession scoring of a bunch of guys - a much better version of last year, with extreme high efficiency and lower volume.
