Game Thread: Hawks host Thunder -- 12/5/22

Hawks look to continue recent success vs. Thunder

After missing the last game with right shoulder soreness, Trae Young is expected to return to the lineup when the Atlanta Hawks host the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday.

The Hawks have won two straight, including a 117-109 defeat of Denver on Friday when they played without Young and starters John Collins and De’Andre Hunter. The Thunder have also won two in a row after Saturday’s 135-128 victory at Minnesota.

Atlanta swept the two-game series last season and has won three straight against the Thunder. The Hawks have a three-game winning streak against Oklahoma City in games played in Atlanta.

Rookie A.J. Griffin started for Young and scored a career-high 24 points. Jalen Johnson replaced Collins in the lineup and had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

“A lot of our guys were ready to step up and play,” Murray said. “The main thing I try to preach to those guys is to try to be confident each and every day. It’s just basketball. You’re going to turn the ball over. You’re going to make mistakes. Overall, I think we were having a lot of fun as well.”

Atlanta is hopeful that Young can return after being a late scratch on Friday. He averages 27.8 points and 9.6 assists.

An Oklahoma native, Young enjoys playing against the Thunder. He scored 41 and 30 points against Oklahoma City last season and is averaging 24.3 points in seven career games against the Thunder.

The Thunder got their leading scorer back on Saturday. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander returned after sitting out a game with a bruised hip and scored 33 points on 10-for-17 shooting.

“Felt good playing basketball again,” said Gilgeous-Alexander, who averages 31.1 points and has scored 30-plus points in six consecutive games.

Nate has to bench Bogi now, he was good in the first half, shooting 6/8 in 12min, but he's not in rhythm enough to be effective: 0/4 in the second half and ATL lost about 10pts with him on the floor.
Stop it now, I would have stop it at 15min and maybe bring him back a bit later, but he's now at 20min and playing long stretch. It's a gamble for someone having not played for months

4th quarter woes continue.
Start of the 4th for 6 minutes:

2 points, TO, Missed 3, Missed 2, TO, Missed 3, Missed 2, Missed 3, 2 points, Missed 3, Missed 3, Missed 3, TO....for 4 Measly points.

We went from being up 4 to down 4 in those 6 minutes.

IMHO, this one is on Nate, he shouldn't have play Bogi that much, it was great to see him good on offense, and it brought something to the team, but in the second half, it was quick to see that he was not the same, and missed all his shots (0/5)
He kept him on the floor 10min before deciding to bench him, it's exactly when OKC came back and took the lead and the momentum

Then AJ just hit one shot, Trae not so much more, and Murray missed FTs

This is why I say Nate doesn't coach with instinct and feel. After the 1st TO in the 4th after OKC took the lead, he should have subbed out Bogi and JJ. But Nate doesn't like to mess with the timing of his substitution patterns. He should have realized Bogi and no legs.

Trae Young 31% from the field, 1-7 from three.

If you think I'm being negative about Trae by continuing to post these numbers I'm not. It's the reality of how bad he's been all season.

5 for 30 from three his last four games. I wish I knew how many points our opponents have scored off of his 25 misses.

Hawks scored enough points but they couldn't stop penetration. It's a recurring theme vs younger teams that relentlessly attack. Even with JJ, JC, and DH all healthy, the go to move is OO and CC down the stretch in this one imo.

Considering those 3 forwards are hurt or injured, Nate still doesn't want to play the two best interior players together. No one was stopping SGA and Giddey from getting to the rim. Having a strong last line of defense seemed like the most logical move.

Atlanta Hawks PR: Dejounte Murray has swiped at least two steals in 14 of Atlanta’s 24 games this season. Heading into tonight’s contest, Murray was ranked fourth in steals per game (1.83) and tied second in deflections per game (3.7).
