Giving up a soon to be overpaid shooter for a non-shooter is a pure tank move this season, and sets the team up nicely for moves in the summer and a quick rebound next season.
Yes but then why not trade Gary for dead salary and picks. Improve our tank, get extra picks, then just sign Poeltl in the off-season if he’s the guy we really want long term. It’s a bad idea no matter how people spin it
(a) Because there's no-one - or only one person - we want in the 20s, at least no-one who can help us next season (don't know, just speculating).
(b) Because we're not going to be a cap space team, and Poeltl won't take the non-taxpayer MLE. He's already turned down a 15 mill/yr extension offer from the Spurs. We need his Bird rights.

(c) Because this is the team's only chance to have a decent defensive C going into next season, Scottie's third, when the Raps really want to be good.
A. There's no way you believe that. There's no way anyone thinks that. You can't fine something that'll help us in the lottery?
B. We could easily be a cap space team if we move more useless old players for expirings and picks. I'm not suggesting that Gary alone would be enough space to sign him. I've been here for almost 15 years, and a fan for 20, I know how the cap works.
C. It's not our only chance. We could trade for one any time we want if we're willing to give up something, which, guess what, we should be willing to do if we're tanking. Plus, if we're moving towards increasing our draft odds, we don't need to worry about that right now. Develop Precious and Koloko for the rest of the year and possibly next.
Liquidation isn't a new concept
