The random outbursts of points are fun, but you can't build a foundation around that profile. He's a luxury for a team that has everything else and also a strong culture. That's not us. Hard pass at Resigning him.

I don't really consider him random at this point.

He scored 15+ points in 30/35 games he has played in this year.

His percentages are down, but he pretty much carried the offense while LaMelo and Rozier were out to start the year and that is not his role. This boils back down to having realistic expectations for players.

You can't expect to have 15 ppg 2 way players just hanging out in FA willing to sign for the cheap. Those guys are expensive 20+ million AAV or usually cost multiple firsts to go get.

I'm fine with Kelly provided everyone understands he's a bench player, playing bench player minutes, making bench player money.

If all of those aren't met then I'm perfectly fine moving on. He hasn't shown to be much of a needle mover despite the scoring volume.

He is paid bench player money now, $13 million for a wing starter would be one of the best deals in the league. I think moving forward any real starter is in search of 20+ million.

the "random outbursts" was in reference to his god awful 3pt shooting. 30% on 7.4 attempts/game this year, shockingly worse than last year on similar volume. career 32%.
he has been a bit more palatable since he drove to paint more.
the ppg is inflated. 18 shots per game, nobody else to score due to injuries and kupchak's **** roster
defense is still really bad despite more effort and lots of deflections.

like i said, on a stacked team, decent luxury, see if he gets hot, ride him, if not, no biggie.
on bad team, just a dude scoring on tons of volume. empty stats galore.

if melo was a wing who shot worse % from 3 and couldnt or wouldnt pass he would be oubre.

He reminds me a bit like S Jax with his hot streaks, can win games when they’re on.

Difference is that SJax was a good defender

Fair point to Kelly who says he lives this team and wants to be here. That does count for something in my opinion.

His ideal role is 15-20mins off the bench. If he's hot, let him play 30. If he's not, he gets 10.

If he could be an average defender, he'd be 2X as useful.

That might have worked under borrego, but you know that type of rotation doesn't work under RainMan. Kelly must enter game 5 mins left in Q1, leave with 5 mins left in Q2. repeat for 2nd half. No deviations or else the ecosystem could become unstable.

I think if Rozier is back, sure it's not as necessary for Oubre. My point was if Rozier is moved, we need someone who can score on the wing. Even if we draft Scoot, we need someone to be able to score off the bench potentially.

I just think we tend to act like finding a 2 way wing that can score 15-20 ppg and be a good defender is easy. Yet nobody has a solution to how we get one, who we trade for one, who we sign etc... it is expensive.

Is Oubre the answer to all the issues? no. but nobody that is signed as a bench wing making 10-15 million per year will be.

McDaniels played 26 mins and went 0-5 and scored zero points last night.
2 games ago he played 25 mins and went 1-6 and scored 2 points.
3 games ago he played 26 mins and went 2-7 and scored 5 points.

If Oubre did that he would be getting dragged on this board.

There are plenty of players in the league that would average 15+ ppg on 52% true shooting if you gave them minutes and let them chuck shots like a superstar, but if Oubre is averaging 15 ppg for you then your team is bad or you need to fire your coach. Hes a bad shooter, bad scorer, and an abysmal playmaker with horrible bbIQ.. Hes just a bad offensive player and hes even worse defensively. There is no universe where you want him taking even the amount of shots hes taken in previous seasons. He shot less last season but his shot profile was even dumber and his efficiency was still bad like it has been every season of his career. His ideal role on a good team is bench warmer.

I'm sure he does want to stay with the only team left in the league that will let him chuck awful shots all game like hes an all-star.

Be more dramatic lol...

I don't think averaging 15+ppg in the NBA is nearly as easy as you make it out to be. Who are signing or trading for that can average 15 ppg next year for this team? and how much are you paying them or what are you trading for them?

His numbers suck this year, but he played 24 games without LaMelo and only 11 with him so far. We have seen how much better PJ, Plumlee and Rozier have been with LaMelo playing. 10 of those games were without Lamelo and Rozier and another 17 games without Hayward. Basically, he and PJ were forced to carry the offense for a good portion of his games played this year.

there are 169 players in the league averaging 15ppg/per 36 that have played in at least 30 gms

heres a fun fact
oubre is averaging 1.13 points per field goal attempt
mcdaniels averaging 1.2 points per field goal attempt

https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask?q=2022-23+charlotte+hornets+players+pts%2Ffga

kelly takes 19 shots per game, that ranks 28th in the entire league.

i promise you i can find a bunch of dudes who can score with crap %s if you let them jack up a ton of shot and do literally nothing else on the floor

i dont understand why you fixate so much on points per game when evaluating the worth of a player's contributions.
there has always been the idea in the league that averaging 15-20 isnt that hard if given enough volume. its the guys who can jump from 20 to 25 to 30 while remaining efficient and drawing the attention of defensive game plan that separates the volume scorers from the elite

Yeah, this works if McDaniel's efficiency doesn't drop by taking another 9 shots a game. I would be willing to bet it would.

Go find 5 guys averaging 15+ ppg that you think we should pursue in FA or trade that would be much better fits than Oubre. Along with what you are willing to pay them or what you would trade for them?

thats the point though... you dont pay for those types. you grab them in 2nd round or out of gleague or off the end of someone's bench for pennies

i'm saving my free agent budget, lotto picks and trade assets for player types that are hard to find (rim protectors, shot creators, 3D, elite role players), not one-dimensional volume, empty stat, chuckers. same reason its dumb to draft guys like bouknight at 11. if i'm gonna swing and miss, do it for a player type that is hard to find or expensive to acquire.

We have nobody who can average 15 ppg in the second round currently. We never sign anyone out of the gleague. and you have yet to name one player we can get for pennies from another team that is averaging 15 ppg.

You keep making it seem so easy to find these 3D players... over and over. That is all you talk about surrounding Melo with. They are rare, which again is why I am asking for who are you getting that can do that? and you keep avoiding the question over and over again.

i just said the exact opposite in the post you quoted... you save money and assets for players hard to find, like 3D. you dont spend on guys like oubre. good gms find oubre types on the trash heap/bargain bin (which is how we got oubre to begin with, because he was the only free agent other than lauri left. obv, we chose poorly.)

you want an example? we've been talking about it in trade thread - bones. we could prob flip mason or that nugz pick or even mcd swap and get bones.

you want past examples?
graham. but at least graham could pass and tried on defense.

remember that time we traded a 2nd for mo williams who dropped 17ppg in a snail paced cliff offense.
gary neal and pargo put up 17ppg+ /36 for us on the cheap.
troy daniels 18ppg/36
lamb who we got for 2nds
lin who we signed on cheap
marco, late 1st (which was dumb)
parker who we signed for cheap
^all those could put up 15ppg on high volume if given chance

every team has these kinds of signings every year
