The happiest ending in this relationship (and for our future) is if we win a championship and then S&T him to Houston. Harris's contract expires after next season, and maybe we can find ourselves players in free agency of summer 2024 and beyond. Or we use Harris's expiring + Maxey to go after another top-10 player.
Maxey and Harris isn't getting you a top-10 player.
I don't love the idea of giving Harden a big long-term deal, but letting him walk does more damage to this team than having an albatross a few years from now. They don't have the assets to replace him.
Just let Maxey grow into the lead guard role then. It’s just an unforced error to sign Harden to a big deal knowing he maybe has 1-2 good years left.
You have the MVP of the league in his prime. You don't have time to waste. Remaining a contender in the immediate future is more important than having clean books.
