Doesn’t do anything. His salary will still count on our cap. And who are we replacing his roster space with? I doubt we can fill all roster space with players better than him.

If he comes back healthy, he’s still likely better than who we’re creating the roster space for.

So not only should we absolutely keep him for the next two years at $17.4 mil per year, but we should already be thinking about re-signing him once that deal is up as long as the price is right?

At that point Isaac will have sat on this roster for 8 years and be one of the longest-tenured players in team history.

Why don’t we just extend him now to make sure we lock him up until 2029.

What is the advantage of cutting him now?

The fact that he and Weltman have said he'll be ready for the start of the season is pretty telling to me for a team that has been so short on injury info in the past.

The goal for next year is to make it to the playoffs an JI is part of those plans. If he can't make it through the season, we'll know what we have to do but if he stays healthy and impacts winning, why wouldn't we look to extend him? And my point is, after all the injuries, the Magic should get a hometown discount on whatever his market value is. But if you want to make decisions based on emotions, you do you.

Welt can say what he wants, but this latest injury is not minor. It’s not unusual for an NBA player to suffer a strained adductor muscle. It is unusual, however, for a player to tear their adductor muscle and need surgery. Particularly when the player is only 25.

Isaac’s prior injury was concerning for the same reason. Hamstring strains are common, surgical tears are not.

He tore his hamstring rehabbing, before he even ramped up to practicing. The adductor tear happened playing 10 mpg every other game.

I would imagine this is very concerning from a biomechanical standpoint. After repeated failures at the joints, and after extensive rehab, strengthening and stabilization of those joints, his body is now failing at other pressure points.

Who is last player who gave team "homecourt discount" ? No , seriously? Who? Duncan 10 yeras ago after he won 5 titles and spent 10 years with Spurs already?

We don't need to cut him, but he is unofficially retired since August of 2020. Everything that happend since ACL tear is cosmetic. In my books, i mentally "streached him out" like Mozgov contract. He only exists in salary books.

If person can't handle 10 mgp over 3 weeks he can't play professional sports. And if you are injuried 5 out of 6 years you should probably stop before you end up being officially disabled.

After ACL tear he had additional 2 surgeries while playing 11 games. He almost averages more surgeries than points.

Players with injury histories sign "discounted" deals all the time. WCJ did for us, if he waits a year he gets a way better deal but it is a risk for them because if they get injured they will lose out on a lot more which is what happened to Oladipo. Problem is that it is also a risk for the team for the same reason, so far we are looking good with WCJ, I feel comfortable extending Fultz this off-season at a discounted deal as I believe him to be healthy moving forward and with his history I have to believe he will accept, lock in the bag and not risk an Oladipo scenario. Isaac as much as I want to believe in him, I can't anymore so unless it is a ridiculous discount, it is a no for me, maybe next off-season if he shows something I can change my mind.

Neither did Fultz nor Wendell Carter signed discounted deals.

Fultz had literally one season where he even played basketball, averaged 12 ppg, 5 apg and was slapped with massive exstensions. Only "safety" that contrac had is team's option on $17M. Again, in moment when he resigned for Magic, he spent 2 out of 3 years not playing, and when he did play, he was top 3 worst starting PG in NBA.

Carter similar story, he averaged slightly over 10 ppg and 8 rpg. On top of that, he was injury prone ( still kind a is, only plays 50-60 games a year) , and it was enough for 4 years guranteed $50M.

Isaac's resign was apsolute nightmare and still is because he was resigned *after* he got hurt, and exstension was rushed because he couldn't even play in "contract year".

I would not vaiwe Isaac but i would also not resign him for anything. Let's say you sign him on MLE and thats today what? $11M a year. At this stage of his career his MLE would be pretty much burning money, Al Faruq Aminu style. Lenghty defender without offense who can't play as "big" and struggles to be healthy. There isn't any upside left, guy will be free agent when he is 27. And his body is 39.

The Magic could've waived Isaac last year, and they have the option to waive him this year. They also have the option to waive him next year.

If he's healthy going into the season, I can't imagine him getting waived because we are better when he plays.

Why not trading Isaac for someone else or trade up if we can?

IF we do anything with JI, this will be the route.
He'll be healthy this summer(maybe already).

He's probably worth more to us though, I can't believe the thought of him healthy isn't better than the other choice of for the last roster spot.

We mostly agree and I didn't say Fultz signed a discounted deal, I said if we are resigning Fultz we need to do so this off-season to get him at a discount on his next contract because if healthy this year, next year he will be more expensive. With Fultz injury history, the smart move is to sign an extension or he could risk being the next Oladipo

As for WCJ, I believed the contract to be a discount, because when healthy he had shown he was better than that contract and improving. If we wait a year we don't get that contract for him. But because of his injuries WCJ accepts the lesser contract one year earlier and locks in a 4 year deal. Reason why I labeled it "discounted" because even though it was lesser value than he is worth if healthy, he was always injured so that is where the risk was for the Magic.

WCJ's deal is excellent and came in as a bit of a surprise (being so low)...I don't think it's really just an "injury discount"...he really didn't show very much in CHI...he's been great SINCE signing the deal. He wasn't even a key part of the Vuc deal, it was picks and (somewhat) filler, along with getting off Aminu's deal. WCJ looking so good was a big bonus.

WCJ made an immediate impact as soon as he played for us (before extension) biggest concern with him was he couldn't stay healthy. IMO at the time he was at the very least worth $15M plus per year based on his age and play alone and we got him at $12.5.

Fultz is in a similar situation right now where I am reading per other posters here that he will get $25M plus. If extended right now he likely doesn't get more than $20 or at least in the area, call it $18-$22, instead of $25-$30 plus that I read. That would be a discount based on his injury history because I am pretty sure Fultz and his reps believe he is worth $25 plus, but he knows freak injuries too well to pass up on guaranteed money for 3-4 years or however much the extension is for.

Did he tho? When he arived Magic went on 11 games, 10 Ls streak. Over 3 games his plus minus was -50

Wendell turned into great value, but his contract wasn't discount. He simply , prior exstension, didn't showed much. Especially on Bulls, he was pretty damn bad. And sample size of 22 games on Magic was him looking execlly how he looked on Bulls.

Today, imo he is 3rd best Magic player. But in moment of resign he was just rotation player.

Whole Fultz contract situation is awkward. I would not pay Fultz $14M let alone 18, 22-25 M range is straight crazy talk to me. He is definition of backup PG. Watching pretty much any playoff series explains why he can't start on serious team.

But he will probably sign exstension before Magic play serious playoff series where somebody exploits everything wrong with PG without jumpshot.

Wont argue with the stats, but Carter looked handy from pretty early on, playing the 4 and the 5.

He really wasn't that good at all.

His last games for Magic in season prior exstension looked like this

Keep in mind this is 7 out of 22 sample. So it's near 1/3rd of all games played.

He showed massive improvments after new contract, but he signed contract being pretty meh and considered " not good pick".

ofc compared to Bamba he looked like Hakeem but that's story for another day

If I remember correctly, he had an injury (go figure) during the last 10-15 games or so, plus if you look at the minutes, you clearly see we decided to start the tank during that time. I will have to look at the stats of his 1st 10-15 games with us after the trade not the last set of games for that season, which he was getting inconsistent playing time.

Steph Curry made more threes in 7 games ( 34) than Markelle Fultz in a season (27).

In this first round of playoffs alone those are amount of 3s made by some of starting PGs
Jamal Murray -24
Fox -21
Young - 18
Smart- 15
Harden -14
Garland -12

There is no "jumpshot" without 3 point jumpshot.

Siakam, Beal, Embiid , Fox,Derozan. Those are some of the best mid range shooters in basketball today. Yea... when you make "best shooters today# i highly dobut any of them is making a list.

Just for sake of argument do you consider Spance DIwniddie elite shooter?

He is best "step inside 3 point line" shooter in basketball. 50% for a season on 177 attemps.

Weltman would not have said what he did after season if we were going to waive him. The incentive for money really become a consideration after next year when he is only guaranteed what 2 mil? He isn’t tradeable either. I mean we probably could get a second but some of y’all think we can get a good role player for him or something.
Fine print disclaimer for Fultz:
I am high on Markelle Fultz. Yes I understand he is not perfect and needs to shoot more and better and turn the ball over less. I would really like to see him play one more year… and I did and he sucks time to move on.
