Too bad he was injured and had a crap year
Point guard? Did he show any point guard skills in his time at Arkansas?
Showed as much PG skills as SG skills, or C for that matter.
You guys are just hating because everyone is hating on him. Reality is:
TL;DR - a case can be made to take a chance on him or have him drop to bottom of first equally. Floor is probably Maxey. Ceiling not sure. Not my first or second or third choice but would understand if the risk was taken.
- he was a PG in high school and was pretty good. Also played that role representing the US
- when he went to Arkansas he played PG for a bit and then got injured. Black took over the PG position and when he came be he was the SG. Almost by default since nobody else was a shooter. Terrible spacing
- In his first 5 games of the season he scored 0/16/22/21/5 for assist numbers of 0/5/3/1/0. First game he didn't really play and fifth game he was hurt.
- I went through a few games of Nick Smith (1 good and 2 bad) overall I was disappointed in his play, lack of shooting, lack of engagement, poor defense, inability to finish at the rim. I agree he's a low first round player from his play
- Confused I went back to high school games and watched him play (3 games). He was a special player in high school being better than Cason and Keyonte (Keyonte was chunky in high school). Great feel for the game, vision, finished at the rim, even rebounded well. Played with such calm, special.
- That confused me more so I looked at the all-star circuit. I think he had 3 games, 2 were good and 1 was bad. Definitely stood out on two of those games. One he was the best on the court hands down. Worked really well with Dick, in other words he works well with either a shooter and / or a lob big (which he had in high school). His handle looks nice with space.
- Less confused I looked at Arkansas' Summer Exhibition tour (2 games). He averaged 19\2\3 on 50\40\67. Announcers were saying he was unstoppable, top pick for the draft. 2 steals per game. Incredibly pesky defense, best player in the tournament - again.
- Injury has to be the only way a person can change to such a different player. However, the chip on this man's shoulder is HUGE. Listen to his interviews. He has a build to gain weight. The player I saw in High School and last summer is the player we need. Facilitator, creator, streaky shooter, pesky defender, lanky combo guard. Deep diving him I can see both sides - why Raptors take a chance on him because he could be a perfect fit and why he could drop to the end of the first.
