I guess after the CJ trade the Pelicans decided we are suckers. I'm good with keeping Scoot.

But the CJ trade was good.
It’s the LAC trade that stunk.

I was not a big fan of the return of either trade but we did get Grant with the draft pick at least.

Grant is about as good as CJ.
Who wouldn’t take Hart and Grant over CJ?

Sounds nice but we traded 2 1st round picks for Nance who was included in the trade and we traded Hart for a 1st. That comes out to something like trading CJ and a 1st for Grant. Maybe it works out, we shall see how things go with resigning Grant this summer.

How this team is just wholly unable to pull off any trade of significance is incredible.
do you think it's Cronin or do you think it's the poor value of the assets Olshey assembled, and Cronin inherited?
He essentially traded CJ for Hart, a 1st round pick, and a TPE. And he used the pick to add Grant. And the Pelicans were so impressed after a year of CJ they were desperate to draft a rookie PG....pretty much confirming that CJ's value was always grossly overrated in Portland
he traded Hart, after it was pretty obvious that Hart (and his wife) were not going to resign in Portland, for Thybulle and a first round pick
those are not bad trades, but they accurately reflect the generic value of Portland assets
I think Cronin just has had crappy cards...and he had the bad luck to have a 3rd pick less than a year after the Gobert and Mitchell trades, and a few months after the Durant trade. Recency bias from those trade really slammed the value of draft picks
don't get me wrong, I'm not extolling Cronin's virtues. He talked about how Portland desperately needed length...then he used the full MLE and hard capped Portland to sign and injured-scheduled-for-surgery. He then significantly overpaid the existing market for Ant and Nurkic, which has made them more difficult to trade.
We can’t keep laying every missed opportunity at the feet of Olshey forever. Cronin really overhauled this roster considerably. The assets the Blazers had this year (outside of Simons) were from Cronin. He’s spent the last two years and built a nice collection of assets and still couldn’t pull off anything.
I also disagree that he overpaid for Ant and Nurkic. They’re both fairly paid and in Ants case I would argue underpaid compared to players around his quality. Nurkic is a serviceable C and even at his salary, he’s only the 15th or 16th highest paid C. That’s pretty market value if you ask me.
I just feel like he’s out of his depth as a GM. I have yet to see any real proof that that’s not the case.
when it comes to Ant and Nurkic, I judge their contracts by the market in their off-season. NOBODY, last summer was going to give Ant 25M a year and Nurkic 18M/year. I dont believe Ant would have topped 17-18M/year on the open market; and Nurkic would have been lucky to hit 13M. Their contracts are not egregious, but they could have, and should have, been less, IMO. More than that though is I've never seen a Blazer more suited to a 6th man role than Ant. 6th men don't make 25M/year
as for trades, what do you think the Blazers should have got back for CJ-Powell-RoCo-Nance? RoCo had no value; Nance had next to no value and was injured at the trade deadline. Powell was a 6'3 guard that was bad at defense. What was the asset value that Cronin missed with those guys?
further, what were the Vulcans demanding he accomplish with the trades?
now, you may be right that Cronin is out of his depth. I thought he did well with exchanging CF/Nance for Hart/Grant; and I though he did well with Sharpe. if you kibbutz the return he got for dismantling Olshey's dysfunctional roster 16 months ago, I can't imagine that the assets he failed to procure are significant
I mean, if the Pels were not offering anything other than draft picks for the 3rd pick is that on Cronin? If Siakam refused to commit to re-sign in Portland, is that on Cronin?
I guess my question is what are the opportunities you think Cronin has missed? For certain, his choice of Payton last summer was stupid

I guess my frustration is that it just feels like even without Olshey, we’re still getting more of the same. It may not be Olshey, but we’re still getting sold a bill of goods about what the team is going do, but then they don’t deliver on it in any way shape or form. I know why people hated Olshey, but I’m having a hard time seeing much of a difference between Olshey or Cronin, just that Cronin seems like a pleasant human vs a slimy used car salesmen.

If true and not just Woj trying to soothe over some stuff for Cronin, then I would very much like to get hooked up with New Orleans' supplier because those are some amazing drugs they're on. Truly grade a, top of the line, stellar ****.

honestly DB, I don't really disagree. I just think Cronin has held bad cards to bet for any big pots
and while Olshey-->Cronin was a significant change, the issue is there has been no change in the Jody Allen/Bert Kolde/Vulcan group. I think Blazer ownership essentially sucks

Yep. Just feels like changing the face didn’t change the game. Really don’t know why they didn’t get Ainge when he was available. What he did in Utah could have happened here.

I think once we hit July 10th, we’ll have a better sense of what the team will be with which to judge Cronin for this offseason. That said, I’m not that high on him anyway.

my guess is that Ainge was 5-7M more expensive than Cronin. 5-7M is Vulcan catnip

Re: Twitter Trade Rumor Roundup
This obviously brings down ants value the most I'd say, but maybe it was already low given people mostly knew Miller would go 2.
I don't get the hate for cronin in some circles. We saw nothing good enough and stood pat sometimes that is the best choice especially when you weigh the value of a rookie contract in this market. Scoot by all accounts would be number 1 in any other draft we may have a real stud here, I really hope we can move anf to open up minutes for Scoot at pg if we keep Dame..

If there is a Dame trade, there would be no real need to move Simons, given the youth on the roster.

other than the fact he's not a PG, isn't a wing, is not versatile at all, and is the worst Blazer defender since Nolan Smith?

To use your analogy, I disagree because Cronin has gotten a new hand of cards twice now. I gave him a pass for the CJ and Covington/Powell trades, that was reshuffling the deck. But then he did it again last summer, and he reshuffled again this deadline.
Just not sure how long we can keep putting it at the feet of Olshey here. It made sense to resign Simons and I disagree they overpaid like you said. Orlando has cap space and all indications they would have gone after him were he not a RFA. Nurkic, again, for a solid average starting center… is paid right in the middle for all NBA starting centers. Neither of these are “bad deals” in most unbiased views. I think we here get too down on the Blazers own players contracts after their sign new deals. That’s the market and how the NBA works.
So yeah, that’s just my biggest frustration here, it feels like that inability to ever take big swings is still very much a problem and not improved by just going from Olshey to Cronin. From a “I’m not annoyed beyond belief watching this a hole” perspective, yes, HUGE upgrade Olshey to Cronin. From actual job performance… still waiting on the change.
And yes, totally agree on the Vulcans/Allen pov. I would give my left nut for her to sell the team to Phil Knight and watch him just make stupid foolish big swing moves like most new owners do. At least it’s TRYING.

Re: Twitter Trade Rumor Roundup
I just can't get behind this as a time to reflect on Portland's poor management. Yeah, it's been a rough several years, but so far tonight they've decidedly NOT screwed up. We could be talking ourselves into excitement over Paul George or some **** right now. Instead, we were gifted a true blue chip prospect -- to play or trade -- and we can get excited over what comes next.
Return to Portland Trail Blazers
