Re: Rate the Dick Pick
Lots of comments here about how the Raps picked based on need. Where’s the acknowledgement that Gradey Dick was supposed to be taken in the top 10 (almost every mock had him there) and surprisingly ended up falling to us as the BPA.
Just because the BPA also happens to fill a glaring need does not make it a pick based solely on need.

Me: Not sure you'll see that leap this time but Bilal Coulibaly is often ranked in the 30s if he's eligible. Talent wise, he has to be taken much higher than that. - mid April, '23
Gets picked 7th.

Yes, we already know who you'd take 7th overall.
Just can't answer a simple question about 13 though.

hahaha this is you.
who would've taken @ 13?
i would have drafted Coulibably.
but he wasn't available.
had he been available I would've taken him.
but he wasn't, so who you got @ 13 since Coulibably wasn't available.
like I said pre-draft Coulibably was my pick.
He's going to watch a few months of the season first and then pick the best guy out of Hawkins, Bufkin, George, JHS, Whitehead, Sasser, Nick Smith, Brice. That will be his guy. He will let us know in 2024.
let me just say this. i believe the pick @ 13 was self-evident.

Next draft you replicate the call I made there. Can't give credit where it's due huh?

Anyways, this pick means Og Anunoby is now expendable.

I actually like the potential of Barnes/OG/Dick as a threesome. Good combination of size/shooting and playmaking from Barnes.

Don’t love it, but I like it. Really wanted cason tho. I hope we didn’t miss out on bufkin. Whitmore I won’t be too sad about if he excels because it felt like the whole league didn’t want him. Will sting abit tho

I liked Cason too. His back concerned me.
Dick was always in my top 5 just because... man, I want someone who can actually reliably bury an open 3 pointer.
After watching more highlights, I like the pick more. He has more skills than just a spot up 3 point guy.

Bufkin looks like a stick too, I don’t think he will be THAT good. Kobe ain’t buff

I like it. Gives us something we’ve desperately lacked and will specifically unlock more out of Barnes and Siakam.
What keeps me from loving it is what feels like a very real ceiling in the upside.

I'm actually NOT one of the posters that selected "Hated It" -- but I did select I Don't Like It.
Doesn't mean I think Dick is trash and some scrub. His "value" is obvious, he's a shooter/floor spacer. He's basically a 6'8 Duncan Robinson, maybe as he adds more ballhandling that will be Huerter and that's not hate, those guys are "valuable" players to their teams because yes it's just a fact now that everyone needs shooting...and that's what this FO did, drafted for "need" which is more my gripe with the pick - a true not hating the playa lol but the game/FO. They made that decision and I just don't like their vision (or lack thereof) for the team as it seems they're constructed much of it on public opinion, not any real strategy of their own and they're missing golden opportunities for the sake of playing it safe and I can't get with that.
The hoard of apologists will blab about yesteryear and the same slow build up expecting lightening to strike twice because they seen the world's biggest fluke of a trade in Kawhi, now blindly believe there's some grand plan although literally the FO is changing their answers of what they're after by the press conference (Vision 6'9 abandoned, immediately brought in two 7 footers the very next year, we're drafting a Raptors type guy that defend, oh no ooops, we got some shooting bc we don't wanna admit OKC pulled the trigger on a trade we wouldn't do for the actual player we wanted: Cason Wallace). They're just floating whereever the wind takes them and basically now are beholden to mid-players like Fred & Pascal who will produce mid results for the foreseeable future.
What they're doing is literally a giant waste of time, so I won't be tuning much until there's a MAJOR change (period) whether that's the players or the FO. The outcome is just way too predictable over the next 3-4 years IF they do just "run it back" with Gradey & some other minor pieces around the fringes as is very likely the case now -- it will be good REGULAR season record, quick Playoff elimination (rd 1 or 2 - they won't sniff a Conference Finals). They just wanna play it safe and make sure they even make it that far because of course MLSE wants that $, and instead of planning for the future with some short term pain to take more of a gamble on guys like Whitmore or Bufkin to become the 2nd option scorer that is ACTUALLY needed long term (or flipping either of OG or Pascal for players with higher potentials than their own) they continue to squander opportunity for real chance at growth & sacrifice it (yet again) for short term gain just to stay in their comfort zone. I don't play that way in my own life, so it's just a matter of principles that I disagree on so that's why I "don't like it" and stand by it even if works out "ok", I don't want just "ok" in anything lol but ya'll have fun with that.
I just want to thank you for so clearly explaining exactly what we are doing and why. I hadn't realized masai is constructing this team based on 'public opinion' (though sadly not yours) but I'm glad you made that clear. Also your ability to clearly know exactly how this latest bogus draft pick will perform in years to come is amazing. Thanks again for explaining everything so convincingly. Like how do you even know so much? That we actually needed Whitmore and Bufkin not Dick is such a sick insight. And the fact that you know we were actually targeting Cason Wallace but chickened out on trading up when a great deal was on the table is mind blowing. You must have amazing connects to get all this inside info nobody else has. Word! And I don't think I've ever seen anyone point out that the Kawhi trade was a fluke before. Shows what kind of a head you got for basketball. Serious props my man. Keep it up. Love your positivity.

Every worthwhile mock draft had him taken before #12, with some as high as #10 as you said. It's easy to think that the Raptors had him as the BPA and it's simply a bonus that he fits team needs.

I'm surprised Orlando didn't take Dick, always had Howard as a likely bust, we'll see.
