What do you all think about DeAndre Hunter? Asking for a friend.

Another reason I'm getting frustrated with how this whole thing has played out is that it's like a slow-motion car crash. We can see how this is going end, it should be no surprise to anyone. So why are we dragging this **** out?

They're going to make sure Sharpe is starting. He'll be at SF, I would almost guarantee it.
Dame / CJ 2.0, here we go!

Defensively, yes. But Dame has never had a guy like Scoot next to him on offense. The release valve is now a guy looking to run downhill and get to the basket 75% of the time. I'm intrigued at least, but don't expect we'll see the experiment play out very long.

This is not something we can just hand-wave away. It's literally been the Blazers biggest problem the entire Dame and CJ era lol.
People have been using this comparison and it's so real. It's the Farve / Rodgers situation in Green Bay.
Why bother with an experiment that will not work? Both Scoot and Dame need the ball in their hands to be effective. CJ was great with Dame because he worked great off the ball, in fact CJ was better off the ball than on it. Dame and Simons weren't as effective because they are also two on-ball players. Dame and Scoot are on-ball players.
Why are we doing the same thing again and again and again and expecting a different outcome?

Scoot actually moves very well without the ball. That isn't to say he isn't a ball in the hands player, but he does move without the ball very well. And Chauncey - who I know many dislike - did try to put more movement into the offense last year to start us off. Dame was even getting better moving off the ball.
Scoot is an elite passer and has a real feel for finding people. Ideally if Dame stays, we're trading Simons (and I know faith in Cronin is dwindling) and the lineups would look something like..
Dame/Scoot
Shaedon/Scoot/Matisse
?/Matisse/Murray
Grant/Watford/Walker
?/someone/Watford
Or we can shift Grant to three. The question marks are who we acquire with Simons (again with the knowledge faith in Cronin is waning). And then what we do with Nurk.
If we go into the season trying to start Shaedon at the three, though, unless he's grown about an inch or two and has put on weight, will impact his development and be terrible for the team overall and will make me lose whatever remaining concerned faith I have in Cronin.

My thing with Cronin is that its seeming more and more he's kind of a bad negotiator. He cut his teeth with the Blazers in scouting and he has Schimtz to make the teams scouting even better... but for getting deals done, it sure seems like other GMs feel they can just take advantage of him left right and center. It makes me wonder if those first deals he made as GM when he moved CJ and RoCo/Powell, if that didn't give him a bit of a reputation around the league with other GM's as someone that you can exploit because of his inexperience with trade negotiations.
And to Joe's credit, it does seem he does his best not to get taken advantage of and make stupid deals anymore... but that also means I don't see how Simons is getting traded. Other teams won't offer fair value and Joe doesn't show any interest in taking anything under what he feels is fair value (which im not saying as a bad thing)... sooooo...
If they do keep Dame, I think the Blazers opening night starters is probably this...
Dame
Ant
Sharpe
Grant
Nurkic
Is that doing anything for anyone here, it's not for me.

In fairness, I think right now there is a lot of trying to take advantage of the Blazers because they know Portland wants to keep Dame and Dame doesn't want to go young. That's a hard river to navigate in the best of times, much less so when it's constant public dialogue for two months.
I would like for us to know wh at was really on the table and offered.

I'm annoyed the blazers announced they want to win now and that Dame through Chris Haynes announced Dame is anxious to win now. If both could've said that more privately we'd have a lot more leverage in talks of this nature than we do currently

I like him a lot of Okongwu is part of the package. In isolation he's pretty good. He passes the eye test, has some great defensive moments but seems limited offensively and inconsistent in general.Goldbum wrote:What do you all think about DeAndre Hunter? Asking for a friend.
As I mentioned on the other thread Dame to Boston makes a ton of sense, even more now that they got KP. Send Brown home to Atlanta.

Dame put it out through Haynes pretty early that he wants nothing to do with Boston.

My money is on Kuzma coming in and Simons going out…
Something like
Simons to SAS
Kuzma to Por
Graham, McDermott, pick(s) to WAS
Kuzma is young enough to flip if things don’t work out, fixes our log jam. Simons would be a huge get for SAS, Was gets expirings and picks which is what they’ve openly stated. I don’t think it makes a big difference in the W column but it might be enough to convince Dame to give it a chance.

I am aware of that but I still think it is his most likely destination. That was also prior to the KP deal and our draft. If his options are to stay with Portland until something better comes along or go to Boston now he might have a different opinion.DusterBuster wrote:Village Idiot wrote:I like him a lot of Okongwu is part of the package. I don't know if I mentioned it here or not, but there's been quite a bit of chatter that yesterday, after the Pels had tried unsuccessfully for a week to trade for 2 or 3 using a bunch of future 1st's and #14, they 'reportedly' pivoted to offering Zion to Portland but the Blazer had to send back #3, Sharpe, and Ant. And Cronin told them to pound sand
apparently the Blazers had plenty of offers for #3 but they were all crappy like that, and most were worse. Cronin tried but teams weren't stepping up with near enough of an offer for a 3rd pick in a 3 player draft
*******************************************
it's also reported that after the draft, Dame called Scoot to welcome him to Portland. I don't think that means much as far as if he asks out

Chauncey's "movement offense" caused us to blow 17 double digit leads while we were still trying to win. In spite of having three 20+ PPG scorers and Dame having the best season of his career, we just could not score in the 4th quarter. His offense was way to easy to stop when it mattered and he was absolutely clueless about making in-game adjustments.
He is just a VERY bad coach. He is the wrong coach to "win now" and he's also the wrong coach to develop the young players. He will either bench Sharpe or play him out of position at SF. Both will stunt his development.
At this point, my number 1 want is for Jody to sell the team to Phil Knight. I don't care for Phil's politics, but he will have the balls to fire Cronin and Chauncey and be willing to pay top dollar to bring in a competent GM and a proven coach.

Just as a question, are we being too overprotective of Sharpe? I get the kneejerk "hell no" with Sharpe... and that Zion has so many issues with his health, but is making Sharpe that untouchable smart if you're trying to get the highest of high-level player?
Obviously with Siakam and OG level player, fast and easy no. But Zion when healthy (I know) is an MVP-caliber player and it's not a question. He's the kind of player who just doesn't ever come available and the only reason they're considering is those warts he has over the first few years. Was making Sharpe untouchable for Zion the right move?

Who's going out in the deal? I don't see Simons as being interesting to Atlanta given their roster. I'd have interest in any/all of Hunter, Collins, Okongwu.
Return to Portland Trail Blazers
