The only thing I've seen that seems off about this game is the sound design. Everything else looks great.

My buddy was an OG botter and macro master. I hate botting! But I'll be damned if running with 7x GMs wasn't fun.FrieAaron wrote:MikeIsGood wrote:GoldenAntlers wrote:I was on the Great Lakes server circa: 1999-2002 for the majority of my playing.
One of my best friends was a top ranked PvPer for a very long time on that server. My computer was trash, so I was usually just along for the ride.
UO had damn near everything an MMO lover could ask for and so much of it has never even been attempted to be replicated.
How has no Housing system ever tried to do what UO did? Unbelievable.
We had overlap for sure. I played Great Lakes 2000-2002 or so. I bounced off of Third Dawn and stayed in Renaissance - don't recall if the worlds were fractured between expansions or not. I had a 2x GM blacksmith (smithing and mining), a 3x GM fighter, and I spent forever working on a mage but never GM'd.
Lots of good memories of that game.
Mage was very hard to GM. "corp por", "corp por", "corp por"
I think I also had a Great Lakes character but if I remember correctly spent most of my time on Sonoma. Played through the Second Age but I'm not sure if I made it to the third expansion.

Oooh good idea. I'm a Shadow Monk too. Dragonborn. I wasn't going to go shadow, but some things are meant to be. What level are you? I'm only at level 3 right now and it's still pretty basic.MikeIsGood wrote:Shadow Monk is bananas. This is the most powerful I've felt compared to the builds I played in EA. I'm level 5. 4/5/6 seem like big power spikes, so stick with it. But I was finding myself doing quite a bit of damage earlier, too. I've been pretty liberal with Ki usage since it regenerates on short rest.

Re: OT: Video Games/Computers/Gadgets/Gizmos
That was basically what my wife said. It was enjoyable enough but she was worried that the game didn't have enough depth to have any staying power.FrieAaron wrote:Quick thoughts on the Palia closed beta:
It's a familiar gameplay loop. Gather and craft to be able to make better tools to gather and craft better stuff and build/upgrade your home. People who like those kinds of games will enjoy it enough to kill time with it. It's very Animal Crossing.
It falls down a bit as an MMO for me. I'm sure it's possible to make an MMO with no combat, but the group content here is extremely limited. The most engaging I've seen so far is cooking as a group, one person can chop ingredients while the other stirs it, etc. But that amounts to clicking in a very simple rythm game for chopping and holding left click for stirring. Gathering goes faster as a group - anyone chopping the tree or mining the same node gets the resources and you get a buff that makes it faster to fish together, etc, but that's about the extent to the group content. It's not super engaging.
It's also missing some very basic stuff that I would consider essential for a social MMO. You currently can't sit or lie down, etc. So you can visit other people's homes currently and build all this furniture but can't engage with it in any way. And while there's essentially zone-wide chat (max of 25 people), you can't actually speak to people directly around you with speech bubbles or anything like that.
only a fan, only an opinion

Oh, and catching and throwing arrows back at my attackers is bananas.
I’m trying to math your AC. Guessing 18 dex, 16 wis, and bracers of defense? Must’ve dumped most your other stats except con.
Anyway I’m level four, still haven’t seen much new from early access content in 2020, still having an utter blast. This will almost certainly be my GotY.
20 and 16, and yes I dumped a couple. I believe I'm 8/20/14/8/16/10. Yes to bracers. From the AC POV, I am mildly concerned about how it will scale as I progress in acts - in that it won't. 19 feels godly in A1 (which I'm wrapping up in the next couple days), but I imagine it will feel less so by A3. I believe there are no features in later levels to improve the unarmored AC, but maybe there will be some robes or something. Guess I'll see.
I know some people are playing STR monks in medium armor, but I love my movement way too much to give it up. And I just don't need to right now. Going to get to level 6 in Monk, then will start a Rogue dip and see how it feels.
I didn't realize how much bigger A1 was than what I had played in EA so many years ago. I thought for sure I was in A2 already, but I googled for reference and discovered - nope. This game is massive.
Playing a STR Monk in BG3 seems odd because you can’t grapple like you can in the tabletop game. I guess it’d be more like a throw build, but just play barbarian at that point? But yeah, you’re basically capping out your AC already. You might find magic items that give bonuses and in the tabletop game you can find tomes that give permanent stat bonuses to go past the cap of 20, so it’s possible there may be either items or quests that could give you bonus ASIs (don’t know, I’m still in Act 1 stuff).

I’d say level 5 and level 11 are big universal power spikes. Levels where martials usually gain extra attacks and casters gain extra cantrip dice and access to new spell levels (3 and 6 respectively).

You can play strength monk with the tavern brawler feat. And yes, there are items that give you massive stats.I am playing open hand monk now (normal dex build) but I plan to respec to strength later on when I get better armor and items for it.So dex based now for the AC and movement speed and respec for act 3 probably.Only concern is the movement loss but with full strength maybe i will just jump in fights
Edit:i think the best multi class will be 9 monk-3 rogue for the extra attack.havent looked more into it though

Played about 2 hours as a monk and all my memories from EA came back. I’m stoked to keep playing. As a DND and BG noob I have a lot to learn.

Yep this is where my head was at too - the 3-level dip into Rogue for Thief to pick-up the extra bonus action. I'm pretty tempted by Assassin too after learning more about it; advantage on attack rolls against enemies who haven't taken a turn, attacks against surprised creatures crit, and restore all action and bonus actions at start of combat. Which all just really plays into sneaking before combat and starting combat with a sneak attack crit.
What I'm not sure of though, since we're melee, is how well it'll work to start combat with a melee sneak w/r/t the rest of your party. Like they'd probably be so far away from the rest of the battle that they'd be spending a turn or more just moving into battle, leaving all attention on you.
Not sure. Fun to theorycraft though.

I kind of like Pathfinder 2E more at this point. But I also like some “crunch” in my tabletop games. I want a good story, but I’m there more to explore dungeons deep and fight dragons rather than play theater.
All that’s to say is I’m down, but don’t ask me to be the DM

Side question, but what does crunch/crunchy mean when it comes to gaming? I listened to a videogame pod this week and all three hosts used the term and I couldn't understand what it meant. I feel like I've seen it at least twice since then.

It can be loosely used as a catch all for a game with depth. Basically a game with a lot of interacting rules and systems where there’s a lot of strategic depth, planning, and number crunching.
Best example off the top of my head for you would be like, Elden Ring is crunchy in how you plan a build and make things interact to achieve specific results through stats, gear, items, etc... Or another example would be say Diablo 3 vs Path of Exile, where D3 feels very streamlined but lacks the crunch of the labyrinthian skill tree and gem socketing of PoE that leads to lots of theorycrafting and intricate builds.

I feel like WoW has a lot of crunch to it with the various skill trees and player specs. Granted, it very quickly becomes "X is the best so use that".

I have no idea how crunchy WoW is anymore, I think I last played in like 2010? Maybe 2014? It is something I sort of dislike about FFXIV where it doesn’t feel like there’s any build diversity. Mind you I like virtually everything else about that game, but do find that one aspect a little lacking for my taste.

Gamers tend to min/max games to death if you want to push the most difficult content. I know POEs talent tree is massive and gives a lot of options technically but surely even in that game there are a few "best" paths for each class?

There are meta builds for sure, but you might be surprised at just how varied passive skill tree usage can be. It's much more so linked to your skill and damage type than it is to class, but since that means vastly more options, skill tree usage is pretty vast, too.
