But how many would have made the team? Trae Young said he wanted to go, he just wasnt invited. And you really dont need to reach for Embiid.

I am not arguing that USA has by far the most untapped talent here, but any country can make a list like that, THe relevant are only those who were invited but declined.

considering porzingis even on crutches traveled with his team and doncic played the entire tournament on a broken leg. kd, kawhi, butler, steph curry, harden, booker, zion, trae, donovan etc have no excuse. could form 2 gold medal teams. the 2 best players in the finals aren't even the among the 2 best players on their nba teams.

Yea the list includes guys that didn't make the team, even guys that were available, like Cunningham. And it includes players that have other priorities, for example Zion and Ja, and ones where them playing additional minutes would be unthinkable so Kawhi and AD basically.

But do you really have Dinwiddie, Levert level players ahead of guys like Brunson, Haliburton, Bridges?
So many people who attain the heights of power in this culture—celebrities, for instance—have to make a show of false humility and modesty, as if they got as far as they did by accident and not by ego or ambition.

Lithuania sent their A squad, are you high? Half the team that didnt play would beat Lithuania team in this tournament most likely (Sabonis, Kulboka, Ulanovas, Grignonis, Lekavicius, Echodas, Butkevicius...). Bruh.

Also Giedraitis and the center who played for Armani, keep forgetting his name.

Man, I keep forgetting Giedraitis. Yes, Giedraitis would be on this team.

ANd do you think of Artūras Gudaitis? Gudaitis is washed sadly, he was terrible last year, will play in Japan this upcoming season. I named Echodas, because he probably would have been that third center, because since having Motiejunas and Valanciunas already, makes no sense to have another slow big.

I mean, their third best center really is Birutis right now, but as I said, he is just worse version of Valanciunas, so he just makes no sense in this rotation.

Bottom line, Lithuania alone could make a double digit Greekman list of relevant players who could have easily played here.

2023 FIBA World Cup Betting Odds

USA -170
Australia +850
Serbia +900
France +1200
Canada +1400
Slovenia +1500
Spain+2000
Greece +2200
Germany +4200
Italy +5500
Lithuania +6500
Brazil +6500
Latvia +12000
Japan +12000

Thank you. Ninth then, not bad. Not a complete shock but still a dark horse. I am guessing that them not being a "name" team/not having a huge track record of international achievements also had something to do with their odds being on the low end.

Another angle: I recall reading that whatever team knocks out the US usually doesn't win the next match or the whole tournament, because it's just such an emotional high that it's hard to get back to that level of focus. Good job by the Germans keeping their eyes on the prize.

These had to be ebfore rosters were announced tho, no? Because there is no way Greece would be that high.

throw the whole roster out and go with the best talent available right now. defense is huge in fiba, zion, AD, butler, gordon are desperately needed. bane, curry, KD, lebron, lavine, tatum, trae, lillard, etc etc. haliburton would fit on a team with zion, butler, kd, curry. not one with brunson and bridges. next olypmpics could potentially be the last time lebron, kd, butler, curry could play at a high level.

I'm not sure. This article I found from the August 21st also has Germany 9th behind Greece, though with slightly different odds. I'm guessing rosters would have to be set by then right, with all teams playing plenty of warmups at that time.

You are building team like its video game. Does it really fit, you mentioned quite a few chuckers who play no defense, nor move without the ball.
Offensively, 2023 team was good, they struggled badly on defense and rebounding department. they needed enforcer big and a coach who could play him, not guys like Trae or Lavine. We saw how everyone and their momma targetted Reaves and poured points on his head, how are these two any different? Reaves was at least smart and unselfish on offense.

trae gets to the line. butler can play different positions. zion instantly changes the game.

another thing I found strange about the US roster are the coaches. kerr has never coached any of the players on the team. same with spoelstra.

Maybe the whole approach of putting a bunch of the most established nba coaches together is wrong? Perhaps it would be better if they got a full-time dedicated coach, who knows FIBA-rules basketball through and through? So someone nobody here would have heard of, basically. Not sure if it would actually be better just putting it out there.

The strategy is to have coaching staff NBA players like. Lue, Spoelstra and Kerr, thats pretty obvious what they are doing. David Blatt is not the guy they would consider even tho he could probably medal with zero NBA players lol.
