Vando 4/48 is a steal if he consistently plays 20+ minutes in a league where your stars will be making 50-60 million/yr over that same period. Should slot in around ~8% of the cap.
Yes, Vanderbilt was worth MUCH more than just a throw-in in the Gobert trade, and the Lakers undoubtedly thought so giving him 4 guaranteed years, which certainly had to have Lebron's blessing.
If I could swap Gobert/Vanderbilt straight up with their current contracts right now I would do it.
12 mil/year is also perfectly in the sweet spot for salary filler if you are trying to upgrade your 4-7 rotation spots around your star.
He's not a great offensive player, but if he just cuts down on the sloppy turnovers he's not going to kill you on that end by clogging the lane and he can run dribble handoffs, set screens, and is a pretty decent pocket passer.
You know who else played his way off the floor in the playoffs? DeAngelo Russell.
The Lakers desperately needed shooting and still had to sit Russell because he was so terrible.
Vanderbilt wasn't needed as much against the Nuggets as they trailed for most of the series, but he was a key part of dismantling Memphis's offensive attack.
