The 2020 title Lakers were the 3rd-best D in the RS, and Lebron led the league in APG that year. He was a 25/8/10 guy, and AD posted 26/9. KCP, Rondo and Markieff Morris shot well from 3 in the playoffs and LA was the 2nd-best offense in the playoffs. Davis also shot 38% from 3 in the postseason on 2.9 3PA/g, so spacing was actually pretty present for them.
Miami got to the finals with Bam and Jimmy.
Yep. And Miami was the 6th-best O and the 7th-best D this past postseason. Butler shot 35.9% from 3 in the playoffs./ Bam was an 18/10/3.5 guy who passed well. Lowry and Vincent shot well from 3 in the PS. So did Duncan Robinson and Kevin Love. Hell, they even got 2 good games out of Oladipo and one from Herro. So they very much had some spacing to work with during that run.
And of course Butler drew at .625 FTr in the RS (and was a highly-efficient 64.7% TS scorer during the regular season). Dropped down to .421 and 56.5% TS in the playoffs (-0.1% rTS relative to playoff average) but he also led the postseason in MP.
Not an especially strong analog for Toronto this year. You need competitive advantage somewhere. Toronto was pretty average on either end of the floor last year. We're going to need a fairly significant upgrade from one or both of Siakam/Scottie to drive towards title contention. Maybe we see that; if we get the Scottie we saw in that Wizards game semi-regularly, that's going to be very interesting.
